Thanks to those who voted conservative May 2nd, anyone can now purchase the same weapons used in the Montreal Massacre and the deadly Norway Shootings. Congratulations, you just placed long guns in the hands of psychopaths on an open platter.

This is a sad day. Not only are the Cons trashing all the information that we spent billions of dollars collecting. They are also spitting in the face of Quebec who wants that information considering the Montreal Massacre is still fresh in their minds and nearly every police chief in the country who says the registry is useful information that they use on a daily bases.

Seriously though what is the big fucking deal about registering your gun? You register your, car, your house, hell you even register your fucking dog but it's not ok to register your gun? It makes no sense and makes me pissed off as all hell.

Requiring people to register their guns only makes sense, it's only a problem if you are going to commit a crime with that weapon or aren't fit to have it. It helps law enforcement solve cases. I didn't read the links, just going by what is in this thread.

Err? Don't you understand? It might put someone off buying a gun! It's economic inefficiency stoopid!

Well said Spencer! And an other thing, if the Prime Minister is tough on crime, then why would he be giving guns to extremists? The police use them? I guess you need to get new candidates for those mega prisons your building considering crime is on a decline overall.

Still don't see how crime is going to go up as a result of this; bolt action rifles aren't exactly suited to violent crime and registry or not it doesn't stop people from using their weapons or obtaining unregistered illegal ones.

Well I am officially not giving a shit about this situation. I mean it's really stupid that any of this is happening but at the same time I really couldn't give a damn. It'll be interesting to see if anything actually happens as a result.

Yeah, your not going to catch anyone on a crime spree with a bolt action. I mean, it's silly, and I don't particularly understand the reasoning behind the removal, but let's be honest, this isn't something to lament over, and I doubt there will be any noticeable change in crime.

For the record though, if your being held up by a man with a bolt action rifle, you can just laugh at him. You gotta slap that bolt like a mail order bride, so there's not exactly going to be quick repercussions.

Erm I'm sorry report that this is quite untrue. Any gun is a danger in the wrong hands.

    Cumbria shootings

The Cumbria shootings was a killing spree that occurred on 2 June 2010 when a lone gunman, Derrick Bird, killed 12 people and injured 11 others before killing himself in Cumbria, England.

Upstairs, scattered across the carpet are several spent bullet casings from Derrick Bird’s bolt-action .22 rifle.

I wish people weren't so flippant about guns. They are designed to kill things.

I was joking, but my point still stands. The lack of regulation on these guns will not cause crime to go up. It's still just as easy to illegally attain (the much more efficient) assault rifle as it is a long gun or hunting rifle. No man with half a brain is going to go shoot up a school with some that takes that long to reload, and as such, it won't really make that considerable of a difference who's buying one of these weapons.

That didn't sound like a joke. It sounded like ignorance.
    That sounded like a joke.

Derrick Bird wasn't of sound mind but he still managed to kill and injure many people. Why are you assuming that people that kill others are of sound mind and get illegal weapons?

This is why I am pro heavy regulation on guns. Regular check ups and gun certificates only provided to those who absolutely need them. Want to fire weapons? Go to a firing range.

95% of people who go on a shooting spree aren't going to use something like that, and the few who do aren't conclusive evidence that they will be used for that kind of action. You might get a few dumb asses who swing them around, but I still don't see them becoming the weapon of choice for criminals. Also, you keep citing Derrick Bird, who is only one example. Even he used a shotgun in conjunction though, so the act wasn't done solely with one of those terrifying .22 long rifles.

My point isn't that they aren't dangerous, it's that the lack of regulation isn't going to motivate anyone to use it any a crime any more than before. And fun fact, people don't generally use long rifles in crimes. That's pretty basic stuff. It isn't anything to get worked up over, and is really just another example of far-right stupidity.

If I went on a killing spree I would use a flamethrower.
Because those aren't illegal or regulated.

Stalin said it perfectly. This can only damage us and drive even more space between Quebec and the rest of Canada hopefully in response Quebec and other provinces make their own provincial versions. Quebec said they will not pay for the new crime if it passes. Quebec is looking like a more and more attractive place to live.

You're right. It won't cause crime to go up, but it will cause some crimes to go unsolved because the gun registry has already helped solved several shootings here in Canada. Including the shooting of an RCMP officer.

It's the loss of useful information to police. After all they check the registry 10,000s of times per day.

On an unrelated note I hate to play partisan politics over this issue, but the Conservatives are doing it all ready so I will too. This can only be good for the NDP, considering that Harper is desperately trying to expand his roots into Quebec because he believes the NDP have no roots there. However this will only serve to anger Quebeckers against the Conservatives and drive them ever closer to the NDP.

It's a waste of valuable information, but it isn't the end of the world. In proportion to other guns, the amount of crime done with long rifles is relatively minuscule, so I doubt the effects will be too awful. I still don't get the agenda they are trying to push, since gun registration is usually a fairly uncontested thing. I can't see where the popular support is for this.

Areas like mine is where the support comes from a lot of gun owners around here. They don't like it because they own like 5o guns and they have to pay 75$ for every gun they have to register.

I don't think that the standard-fare idiots are sufficient support to push for something like this though. You need some kind of larger middle class, or bi-partisan support.

There is probably many people who don't support it, but they do support the Conservative Party so the Conservatives are just doing it because they can.
