So I had this thought one day that we should build life size cities/towns to study social science in real life situations. Idea is to create a real town, by getting funding from nations, corporations, organizations & private individuals. Then few thousand people would be hired to live in that place for x period of time, they all would be studied and they are required to write a diary every day, which will be studied as well. Now imagine the possibilities! We can study how people act/feel under oppressive or totalitarian regime. How do people act if they would have only limited aces to food etc. But this all is not what got me thinking about it. You know how USSR was called this one big experiment? Well it was not. They jumped right into unknown, without experimenting first. What I'm getting at is that using this large scale experiment, we can test out new forms of societies, tweak excisting ones and develop new ones. We can also prevent people into stepping into a pit falls: If something does not work, this program can save millions of lives. How can we make our current system better? Can we make communism work after all? Are robots more capable or even better to rule, than we are? We can give you an answer to all these questions.
You guys can make a anarchist free zone, and watch shit burn and collapse on a smaller scale. Sounds like a blast.
I voted yes and have frequently thought about things like this. After playing games like bio shock, or listening to my uncle explain how communism obviously fails every time and uses as an example of USSR, I wish we could do something like this. However, we all know this will never get done. Why? The citizens will be predisposed to liking/disliking their society. The period would have to be longer than a few years. I'm thinking 20 years would be about right. The laws of these towns would not be enforceable without consent of the nation they are within. The mere existence of political ideas that counter political power in major countries would be immediately discredited or never sponsored in the first place. The only way around these sorts of problems is new unclaimed land, and I'm not thinking of Earth. Thousands of years in the future, what about colonies on other planets? To me, it seems to be the only way to effectively perform the experiment, what with the space and time difference, cost of travel... etc. The colonies would have to have no ties to existing nations, or, have won their freedom in some sort of rebellion similar to what happened to the new world.
People would be hired to take part in these experiments, like in any other. It is completely volunteer. And this city will be just like any other experimental facility, only larger. Once experiment is done with, people can go and new one will start.
Depends on research. Russian cosmonavts were held in a tube for two and a half years... We are probably looking between few months to few years
Well regardless I think Fallout 3 shows what can happen if that were ever to happen, So my answer to you is, it depends on the specific experiment.
So long as it is privately funded by the and not done by the government, and has no government involvement, why the hell not. I wouldn't be much of a libertarian if I disagreed.
I been thinking, if we can build two cities. One generally governed by leftist ideals, and one generally ruled by right wing ideals. And see how they do in ten years. That would be interesting.
They would both be very successful probably. It's when you mix them that things go to hell, or if you force one upon the nation.
Not sure how you would keep them in there, if you get a job and then learn how bad the country is then you would expect the US or the UN to start getting pissy to release people. Only if you were born in that place and your parents were in on this and told what to tell the children. Then you can truly describe a viewpoint of someone born in an oppressive government. While were at it lets make them speak a language such as ancient Greek, it would be interesting to observe how people would speak these older languages and use words within context. We could learn many things from this little experiment.
Sounds really fucking expensive. If your talking about moderate ideals for both then they'd both probably be successful. In fact, it would probably simply come down to sheer chance if one did terribly. We could use people who are "unaware" of political philosophy. For instance, people from rural parts of Africa would be unbiased. A city doesn't have to be that big if all the supplies for it are being sent from foreign aid. If governments really got into it, a small, unpopulated island would be perfectly fine. This is entirely true. China wont be up thee donating to test democracy.
I've always been intrigued by the idea of designing my own city with my own perfect society full of likeminded individuals.
I would be ok with this only if nobody dies in it and people only get there if he/she agrees with it.
