Well that's been the general consensus since Roosevelt, frankly. I don't think most Americans have ever been free market fundamentalists, and most would probably identify with Keynesian economics. I guess you could call it 'leftist,' but I've never heard of a political position that supports income/wealth disparity.

That is a bit of a strawman Kal. No political position supports disparity but the Republicans (and largely the Democrats) allow it. This poll states that the public want government to persue policy which makes it more equal. They want government intervention to redistribute wealth. Which isn't exactly the position of either the Republicans or the Democrats.

Well of course, when a fuckton of people are unemployed, rather than blaming themselves for not being competent workers, they turn to a scapegoat. In this case it is the Free Market.

This can mean whatever you want it to mean. For instance the majority of people answering the poll could just want the minimum wage increased.

Which is somewhat left wing as you aren't letting the free market decide wages. The very fact that they want policy to interfere to make society more equal is left wing.

When a company announces that they will be hiring 2,000 new employees and something like 70,000 people apply for interviews; I think it might be time to abandon this "The workers are just lazy and blaming other people for their laziness!" mentality Kara.......

Yeah nice victim bashing Kara. The free market caused the recession, it put people out of work and it isn't providing the jobs.

This is not the 1920's anymore. Things like the minimum wage and vacation are mainstream. Just because I don't want to have to call in sick to get Christmas off does not automatically make me left wing.

OK. But when you have a President that proposes social security cuts, medicare cuts, belonging to the so-called left party I think it's important to show how far they have diverged from the public. Especially when 56% support avoiding benefit cuts against 33% that prefer avoiding tax increases.

So go fucking make jobs. Open a car wash or something.

When you owe practically your entire GDP and rising it's time for cuts. And Obama hasn't been making cuts. If anything he expanded our welfare state through Obamacare.

This is economic and political realism, He has to balance the federal budget (which is basically made up of military, social security and medicare) and doing so only through taxes would pile on a huge strain on the national economy, not only that but he has to work with Republicans on this to get anything done. They want the governments budget to be slashed to the bone and to a certain extent most people would agree with that. So he's going to try and do both, hopefully putting as little strain on the economy as possible.

The public does not agree with you. "Military, social security and medicare" you said. Why not the former? Does the US need that many military bases? Does the US need to be spending more than 5 times the next biggest military spender (China)? Cut the military not social security which has run a surplus and don't cut medicare just to save the rich being taxed a reasonable amount. It is argued that universal healthcare would cut the deficit:

It's not that simple Kara. When your country is that far in debt you raise revenues and cut things you don't need like military, you don't cut things you need like welfare.
