Because here in Germany, we've got das Bier!

Actually, it's because of all the things that battleearl, yuri, and viking said earlier. Germany is centrally located in Europe. It was a highly industrialized region even before Germany became a unified nation state in 1871. It is the most populous European state with 82 million people (if you exclude Russia). It has a society that beats to precision, accuracy and efficiency. Rising from the turmoil of the Weimar Republic and the self-destructive madness of the Third Reich, the federal republic has, since its establishment in 1949, provided Germany with a highly stable, cohesive liberal democracy. The economic miracle of the 1950s allowed the federal republic to quickly become a stable middle class society, shunning fascism and communism, and allowed it to become one of the spearheads of European integration, bringing the country back into the world community. German companies are among the world's leading brands in electronics, automobiles and transit. The reunification of East Germany, for the most part, was very politically smooth and painless, but economic inequalities with the eastern states still persist, but are slowly vanishing (Dresden, Leipzig, Erfurt and Schwerin could be mistaken for any city in West Germany today, if you ignored the occasional commie block). In short, it's a powerful, important state because it has a lot of people, a highly structured society and sophisticated work ethic, a very large economy, and a very centralized location.

However, Germany does have powerful neighbors too, like France and increasingly Poland. Both neighbors, like Germany, are big in both land, people and resources to tap. Because the French, Germans and Polish are some of the biggest supporters of European integration, you'll see this Weimar Triangle probably increase in relevance as there are continued doubts about the economic security of the PIGS countries.

They are in the center of Europe. You are bound to be strong when you are right smack dab in the center of Europe.

The one of the big reasons why Germany is up there as a powerhouse in Europe is its population and yes its industry too, i mean Russia have to rely on German industry now, but also Germany have to rely on gas from Russia. Also, its economic engine for the European Union, so again its at its peak i would say. Before all this though, the highest point Germany has got up to is when it was formed as the German empire just before world war 1. Not only was it powerful in industry, but also militaristically it was dominant in.

I wasn't aware they were the "dominant power" in Europe. Isn't that space filled by Britain and France?

Well, as long as they can keep their troops sober (their have been more then one incident involving alcohol with German soldiers) they still have a decent army.
German weapons like the G36, the MG4 or even it's Leopards are on par or better with other powers.
They just haven't been used as much.

Probably something to do with the fact the constitution didn't allow the Bundeswehr to leave the country until fairly recently.

Dammit, forgot about these, although brazilian Feijoada is making our economy rise as well, however it's falling again, maybe because people today eat more hamburguers instead of Feijoada.

Well, I agree there. But you can also ask how Britain, an island, has remained so powerful in Europe?

Because it is an island. Means no sucker managed a successful invasion, and like Spain + Portugal before us, we were best-placed to send boats around the world :)

Poor Spanish, I wonder what the commander of the Grand Armada was thinking when he got his whole fleet destroyed?

Don't worry. This country is pretty thoroughly democratic now, so having people like the NPD or a party even more left than Die Linke come to federal power in Germany would be next to impossible. Christian Democrats, Socialists, Liberals, Greens, reformed Marxists would just not stand for it.

Yeah, I understand that. I understand Germany is kind of like a giant peacekeeper in the middle of Europe.

I'm not so sure about that.
