You realise that most of the slaves that DID escape were in the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. The most effective method of escaping. You need to learn your American history before commenting on a Civil War Thread.

Of course I know about the Underground Railroad, asshole. But how big is the chance of you meeting up with one of their members? You can't just go on the street, tapping on white people's backs asking: "Do you know where I can meet up with the Underground Railroad? I need to get out of the country." I'm not a complete idiot, I know about the history of the US.

Sojurner Truth would help you. Its not that hard. Your making it some huge acomplishment when an African American escaped. It was really common. That was the most idiotic statement ever. You don't know what your talking about.

For you two guys fighting about the Underground Railroad here are some facts.
The Underground Railroad was an informal network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century slaves in the United States to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. The term is also applied to the abolitionists, both black and white, free and enslaved, who aided the fugitives.Other various routes led to Mexico or overseas. Created in the early 19th century, the Underground Railroad was at its height between 1850 and 1860. One estimate suggests that by 1850, 100,000 slaves had escaped via the "Railroad". British North America, where slavery was prohibited, was a popular destination, as its long border gave many points of access. More than 30,000 people were said to have escaped there via the network at its peak, although US Census figures account for only 6,000.

Most of them actually tried to get to Canada, because any lawmen from the South (before the war of course) could wander up into the north and call some black guy an escaped slave, and if he can't prove he isn't, he get put back into bondage.

And Carthage, you are the most retarded ten year old on these forums.

He is 12. Also yes that happened quite alot where a slave would get up to say Vermont and then a slaver owner would track them down and have them enslaved again, your best bet as a slave was to either leave the country via Mexico or most likely Canada.

This leads me to concluded that (our) Stalin is secretly black.

Yeah, first of all: Sojourner Truth could not be in 20 states at once, she wasn't some kind of Superwoman. Then, you say I make the most idiotic statements ever, and that I don't know what I talk about, but, sir Carthage: Do you have any counter arguments, except "Sojurner Truth would help you."?

And I was talking about it being hard to get past the border, your counter argument: Use the Underground Railroad (just buy a ticket, it's not hard!). I say it's not hard, and you say Truth can help you! She lived in the north for all her live! And you call me an idiot?!

You don't buy a ticket for the Underground Railroad. She's called Sojourner for something. She journeyed and helped slaves in the South escape to the Underground Railroad. The thousands of slaves that escaped is my arguement. And it's life. Next time before you insult someone for a typo make sure your OWN grammar is correct. Your last paragraph made absolutely no sense. You are a dumbass.

Sojouner Truth lol. You mean Harriet Tubman bro. And its not just Harriet Tubman. It was fairly easy to escape using the Underground Railroad. You had guides helping you so you were not just going blind.

    1) Really?! You don't?! I am really glad we have someone like you keeping this thread intelligent!
    2) Sure, but the Underground Railroad (UR from now) was not organised in the South, you'd have to get to the North before they got you out of the country. Quote (Scholastic, "The first 'stops' along the UR were found in the South"):
"The UR did not exist as an organization in the south. Slaves rarely received any help until they reached a free, Northern State. They had to reach freedom on their own, which they usually did by foot."
    3) Quote (Slaveryinamerica.org, "escaping slavery"):
"Some historians contend that up to 50,000 blacks ran away each year of slavery, especially from 1830 to 1860. However, most of these runaways were not attempting to escape slavery by fleeing to free states. Rather, they ran for a variety of reasons, and the vast majorities either returned of their own accord or were captured."
So, with a total of 4 million slaves...
Also, Harriet Tubman only saved 70 of 4000000 slaves. That's not a lot, is it?
    4) What's the grammar mistake?
    5) My last paragraph made absolutely no sense? Why so?
    6) Well, that's a valid argument! I am a dumb-ass because I disagree with you!
    7) Next time, for the second time, get valid information to back up your statements!

*surprised* Why, what makes you think so? There is nothing to be sarcastic about, is there?

50.000 (mostly failed) escapes per year on a total of 4.000.000 slaves is not a lot, I'd say.

lol. The Underground railroad WAS a series of stops. Most slaves actually made it to the North and from there to Canada. To say it did not operate in the South is laughable.
Here are some of the MANY major routes that the Underground Railroad operated in

. In almost every town there was somebody willing to hide any slave that came. The slaves were not going blindly either. They had guides (not just Harriet Tubman, she was just the most famous). Whoever had sheltered them previously would usually lead them to their next location, and the person sheltering them at said location would already be aware that the slave was coming. Many of the houses in the Underground Railroad had trap doors and other hiding spot to hide slaves.
