The thing is back than people in the United States saw themselves more as what ever state they came from, for example a New Yorker or a Texan rather than see themselves as an American. This is whats called Sectionalism. At the time the North and South were developing in to diffrent ways. Different economies, social structures, customs, and political values. In a way it was as if they were two diffrent countries even before the war started. I'm not saying that its a good thing that fellow countrymen are killing each other but that what people back than thought.

The South statistically is known to have lower quality schools (except Texas because Texas is awesome). They do statistically worse on test scores. And Southerners are usually more racist. I am not trying to be prejudiced it is what it is.

Well we were caled the United States because that is exactly what we were meant to be. A bucnh of individual states that were united basically only in times of war and stuff and basically each state having their own laws. And then the National Government put a stop to the disaster known as the Articles of Confederation and made us actually unified in the Constitution.

First we had the Articles of Confederation. It basically said the government can collect taxes but we are gonna give them no way to go about collecting those taxes so they cant collect taxes and cant have any power. It gave the states all the power. You can see why this was a bad idea. We did not adopt the Constitution until 1787.

There were sympathizers who could find you a place and a place to work. And if you go to Canada you can basically start a new life. Others ended up going to Liberia.
