So i've started reading the books of the lord of the rings and it's very good. I saw the movie (of course) but the books have just a massive amount of backkstory that I never knew was there. It made me remember much I enjoy books. I hadn't had the time to read lately sinds I was buzy with school work. It's so much. I've only read the first chapiter but it told me the history of the hobbits and their family's and that of the Shire. I can wait to read more!

And how I got to read the book was in the begining a bit of a joke; I do read (a lot apperently) and some of my friends got me the thickest book they could find in the librery and 'dared' me to read it. I was like: Challenge Accepted!

The LOTR book series is good, but a tad bit more complicated than most people like. If you compare it to the movies, the movies cut out alot of it. For the better. The movies covered all of the essencial points. The books have alot of information that people usually don't pay attension to and its a shame, but to be quite honest, the books are dry in some areas. They go off on tangents explaining something that should be covered in a seperate book on the history of Middle Earth and the reader can easily lose track of the point of the story. I've never actually had this problem, but I hear it alot from people who compare the books to the movies.

You should try the Wheel of Time series as well if you like fantasy. Just beware book 10, its a tad bit static.

I find the tangents and layer backstory of The Lord of The Rings to be exhilarating. I feel obligated to warn you that it is a slog. It takes me an average of (depending on what I have going on in my life) 5 weeks to read the series. Most novels I read take me about a week depending on how much I like them (Though The Brothers Karamazov which I am currently reading is pretty dense).

I also find the backstory very enjoyable so no preblem there, I did find that at soms points the movie can show the sfeer or the manner how people are talking better then the books tell you, but I that's not a problem because I saw the movies.

The chapter Council of Elrond is excellent reading material for insomniacs.

if you do honestly enjoy all the extra back story in the actual books you should check out the Similarion. It's basically the origin story of the LOTR universe
    sirdust and Uberotaku001 like this.

I should really read that one again. The first time I did, I was pretty confused...also, if you want an easier read in the same universe, The Hobbit is very enjoyable as well. Still, the original LotR books (and the films as well) are absolutely amazing.

And this scene. Oh god, this scene makes me shed manly tears; that charge is that fucking epic.

The Hobbit is my favourite book of all times. I love it. I decided to read the Lortr triology about a half year ago. I had seen the films, which are by the way probably one of the best film series ever made. I was surprised to find the Lortr series to be much like The Hobbit because people had kept telling me they were so complicated and slow and stuff. The only really slow part in my opinion was the beginning of the first book, but it was enjoyable.

The scene where Faramir leads his company to it's death on the suicidal charge with Merry singing that song in the background makes me shed manly, manly tears every single time.

Well, death, death...death is a very big word for young master Gandalf. You know, seeing as he kicked the Balrogs ass, resurrected himself into some white mofo and flew off on the back of a giant fucking eagle. Now THAT'S what I call a badass wizard.

Death is a reasonable word for it, because that is what happened. He died. Usually that is the end for most of us, but Gandalf with his awesomeness rejects death and comes back as some kind of a powerful angel, now that's badass.

I like the poems and the songs... The Elven languages are also very impressive... Tolkien has been working on them since he was a teenager...

    Edit:
Unfortunately, back when I was about 8 my dad borrowed the movie (I think it was the first one: The Fellowship of the Ring) and we watched it... Even tough I was way too young... Back then the whole story didn't make any sense to me... And I haven't watched it nor the other movies ever since... :(
But I began reading the books a couple months ago and suprisingly they were very good and detailed and not what I expected...
