I ask you commoners a simple question: what is art?

I dare not voice my opinion initially for fear of coloring your responses, so make with the answering.

Are my notebook doodles art? They're mostly just lines and shapes in strange patterns.

I think art is anything that is made for people to enjoy, or isn't, but is enjoyed anyway; with no other real purpose.

So far only The Shaw's response is giving me what I'm looking for. It'll do for now I suppose, but for all those honkies out there who haven't posted yet, be sure and give his answer a good look before you do.

I guess the only other answer would be what you perceive it to be. The shaws doodles could be art to him and other people while jefmajors peni drawings is art to some people, so in one word you can say, Perception.

If I draw some random lines, circles, and some other random figures... Well, that'll be recognized by art experts as a piece of sh*t! But if Karel Appel drew that, they'll immediately recognize that as art and try to find some type of meaning in it...

Art is something abstract; people attach emotional value to it, while it's just useless material. Same thing with gaming, your brain recognizes a pattern in something, or rather: it tries to recognize a pattern in something.

You don't want to know what "war hol" means in Dutch...

Depends on what on perspective is? Usually art would have to represent something to someone and as such its interpretations vary. Say for example someone makes on of those new art masterpieces with the shapes and the weird colors (according to crack.com modern art was invented to combat communism lol wut) to me this represents nothing and as such is not art, but to some people this represents an entire range of emotions and other ideas or thoughts and as such can be classified as art. Then if we go by that notion shaw's doodles in his notebook can in some way shape or form be classified as art, which can be quite annoying if your making professional art. Personally I like the classical/Italian renaissance arts and consider them to be most artsey.

Another question to ask is do you find street art/graffiti to be art? or just a bunch of hooligans drawing stupid stuff on public property (mind you that alot of these street artiest work go for thousands if not millions of dollars)

Art is whatever you want it to be because it's totally subjective. No restrictions.

Art is something abstract, that express the emotions of the artist. Art is also completely subjective. What can be art to one person isn't to another.

I suppose art is the use of a medium (sculpture, drawing, etc) to express 'something'. I don't mean when some jerk cobbles together a pile of say, bath taps, glues a swastika and a smiley face to it, and then says it 'says something' and that everyone interprets it differently (although of course everyone does interpret every piece of art differently), to me that kind of thing is just meaningless bollocks. Damien Hurst is in my opinion, the most obvious example of this.
I think an artist should know beforehand what that 'something' is that they want to say, whether it's that they want to represent someone's personality through a portrait or express the beauty or ugliness of a scene by painting or sculpting it. What I mean is I think art is only art when it has some sort of real meaning behind it, even if that meaning is extremely trivial. It think it should actually say something, rather than 'say something'. Sorry if it sounds like i'm talking absolute gibberish.

And you're sure it was a penis and not a... thumb?
Speaking of which, get me a glass of sinaasappelsap. Also, translate sinaasappelsap for me.
