So The US Government shut down megaupload for "copyright infringement" and all that stuff that is being discussed in SOPA and PIPA. 4 of the leaders of the site have been arrested and 3 others have charges against them. In retaliation, Anonymous hacked and shut down The Universal Music, RIAA, MPAA, and the Department of Justice sites, among others. They are also planning on shutting down the FBI's site. WTF is going on??!?!?!?

But I mean the fact that the government is all of a sudden doing this during the SOPA controversy raises questions.

Well, my understanding is that the wheels were in motion weeks before the SOPA controversy went 'public'. However, I think the government is trying to see what they can do without SOPA.

Which is scaring me because maybe they will start shutting down these sites without passing SOPA.

I don't understand why America can have jurisdiction over a Hong Kong company and order the arrest of people living in New Zealand.

Its certainly not a simple coincidence this happened when SOPA was on the table. The government is going to begin cracking down hard on these websites. I believe that our government becomes more omnipresent and overbearing, and this was wrong. The FBI should NOT be able to do this. America uses its superpower status to make sure countries like New Zealand stay in line. My dad claims that the government is now going to shut down all of these websites. Then again my dad is a military sergeant and an obvious conservative to boot, while I tend to be much more liberal, to the point that I now consider myself a democratic socialist. In any case, I believe trying to bring all these websites down is like tying to kill the Hydra. Shut down one website and you make its competitors stronger, and leave room for smaller websites to rise and take its place.

Apparently the FBI convinced the New Zealand authorities to arrest them.

No I actually support what anonymous did.

Why? The last time they hacked something that I know of was PSN which caused a HUGE problem for PS3 users.

I don't care if they had it coming. What is the point in ruining people's experience? That is wrong.
