List in this topic movies that you think your betters would enjoy. Of course, this excludes me, as my betters are beyond such base amusements as 'film.'

    Simple minded

    Diggstown (1992)
    Forrest Gump (1994)

    Stay (2005)

    For the discerning commoner
    Fracture (2007)
    Gangs of New York (2002)
    Meet Joe Black (1998)
    Memento (2000)
    Southland Tales (2007)
    The Edge (1997)
    The Godfather (1972)
    The Hurt Locker (2008)

All who aspire to be closer to me
    Apocalypse Now (1979)
    Blood Simple (1984)
    Citizen Kane (1941)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
    Once (2007)
    There Will Be Blood (2007)

That's what I can think of for now. Share your own, or don't.

Apocalypse Now was amazing. The Deer Hunter is another very good one. I'd think about it some more, but I have to go now. I might make a list later on.

To clarify, the divisions in my list don't deal with how good or entertaining the movie is, but how much thinking you need or should do in order to truly enjoy it.

Yeah, Apocalypse Now is one of my favorite movies. And I think this is just Kal's way of getting us to recommend him movies without him having to stoop to the level of asking people to recommend him movies.

    Hmm, thinking movies..
Inception... Nah that movie sucked ass.
I'm having a total mindfuck right now I'll get back to you later. With a list. Of movies, of course.

EDIT: Devil's Advocate was pretty good. So was Insomnia. But enough Al Pacino, I'll be back later with more ideas.

Gangs of New York is a wonderful intelligent movie that explains life in civil war era New York, it is a wonderful movie and I am deeply offended that you would have common plebeians watch Daniel Day Luis in his prime.

I didn't say it was bad. I wouldn't put any bad movies up for recommendation. But the film doesn't require a whole lot of brain power to enjoy. More than Forrest Gump or Diggstown, but certainly not as much as Apocalypse Now or Citizen Kane.

I just watched a Dutch movie recently called De Bende van Oss. I guess you can roughly compare it to the feeling of Gangs of New York. It's about the criminal underworld of a southern Dutch Catholic industrial town in the 1930s just before WWII. You really get the sense of the animosity the underworld had with the government, the military and the northern Dutch Protestants of the time. And it's really violent. I felt like taking a shower after watching it. Check it out, if anyone's interested.

I wouldn't call it Oscar material, but it's not bad.
