Do you remember the textbook's name?

And it sounds state-run [meaning not up to international or college standards].

The states don't make textbooks, their made by private companies and approved by the states.

    Nah, it was Atilla.

He was a Pontic commander. He lost all his battles with Rome. Still a great commander though.

    1. Stagnation was the greatest threat.
    2. I think Moltke and Shaw meant the cult of Mithra not Mithridates VI of Pontus.

Stagnation as in not expanding? Because that was probably the best move they made.

If I were to have to point at one point to be the main downfall of the Empire, I'd have to say their lack of manpower at some point. Of course, this was coupled with barbarian invasions and poor leadership, but the lack of manpower I'd say was the biggest factor for such a massive empire.

It wasnt necessarily that they had a lack of people able to fight, but they had a lack of people willing to fight and an increasing rate of dessertions and people trying to avoid being conscripted.

Yeah, with manpower, I did mean people that could and would fight. I don't know if there's another term for that, manpower seemed appropriate enough.

Stagnation in all areas, for example the Roman military hadn't developed almost at all in centuries while the "barbarians" had caught up a bit in that time.

Also my mind if Arminius had not fought against the Romans but would have accepted their rule, the Romans would have had conquered Germania in Augustus' reign and thus the Roman Empire could have lasted a lot longer. So stopping the expansion, in my opinion, wasn't that good move.

In the end, they were far overextended. Stopping wars over land they couldn't hold anyway would be unwise.
