This happened just a few days ago. However, it goes back a long way and raises many questions on why exactly was he allowed to see these kids.

It all goes back to 2009, when Josh Powell's wife Susan went missing on a camping trip. Although Josh Powell's father (who had abused him as a kid) was a person of interest, the case remained unsolved. Despite Josh Powell fighting hard for custody of the two sons, it was given to Susan's parents. Josh Powell was able to see the kids at a supervised location however on certain days.

Eventually, Josh Powell was allowed to have supervised visits at his home with the children. There did not seem to be any warning signs that he might do anything bad to them at the time. Meanwhile, he was fighting a legal battle to try and gain custody of his children once again. A week before the incident occurred, he was denied custody, and went through an emotional breakdown.

This is where many people question why he was still allowed to see his children. They had begun to confide what happened on that "camping trip" to their grandparents, saying that their mommy was in the trunk on the way there. Josh Powell did not seem stable after being denied custody either. Yet they still allowed the children to visit.

New evidence shows, that on that fateful day, Josh Powell withdrew $7,000 from his bank account. He bought five 1 gallon jugs of gasoline. He was seen donating all his children's toys on that at day. Also, he went to the dump, and is said to have put something in there, that police have yet to find.

The grandparents of the kids said that they pleaded with them to not make them go see their dad on that day. But she, regretfully, convinced them to go. The social worker who usually supervises the visits, took them there. Before they arrived, Powell had sent a voice mail to his sister saying he could not live without his children, and that he was sorry. She immediately called the cops saying that she thought he was gonna kill himself.

At the home, the kids rushed up to the house. Before the social worker could get in, he shut the door and locked it. She proceeded to call 9/11. However, she was on the phone for 6 minutes before the operator decided to send in any support. Meanwhile, she said she heard the kids screaming, and it is now believed that he was beating them with a hatchet.

Then it blew up. She watched in disbelief as the house was set ablaze.

The real problem I have with this is that he took his kids with him. If he wanted to blow himself up thats one thing, but to take your kids whom you say you love into a firey hell with you, that is just sickening. I also want to know why they still let him see his children when he was CLEARLY mentally unstable at the time. This whole story just baffles me beyond belief.

What I find saddest is that social worker who took the boys to their father, she will probably always blame herself for there deaths(and at this point in time she does). Even thought there was virtually nothing that could have been done. He was hell bent on killing himself and his kids one way or another.

Well from her interview with 20/20, she understands that she did everything right, but still feels like she could have prevented it. I would hate to be the grandparents, because the kids said they didnt want to go, and they forced the kids to go.

They called it a hollow victory because they now know who killed their daughter but lost their grandchildren.

You know, I am not entirely sure it was him alone. Don't forget his ever so creepy father who is locked up for child pornography. He claimed to have been in love with his wife and even wrote songs for her. He went as far as to claim they had a sexual relationship. Still I am glad the parents see it as a hollow victory, It must help them recover a little.

Yeah they believe it was both of them and they think they now have the evidence to prove it.

They should, but never underestimate the incompetence of some police departments.

Not to mention the social worker being on the phone.

Social worker:"Help help a man just took his kids in his house and locked me out! I can smell gas! I can smell gas!"

911:"Stay calm, the police need to respond to life threatening emergencies first."

Some people are just idiots. In what world does smelling gas coming from a house with two kids in it not equal a life threatening emergency.
