    Any regular debater will tell you that it happens pretty much all the time. I've been on my school competitive debating team for 5 years, the way it has always been is that you get assigned a topic and side. It's not about whether you believe your case, it's whether you can effectively argue in favour of it. The only time I've been able to choose a side is when we have informal debates in class, and even then only very occasionally. If you think about it and look at it from a learning/educational perspective, it's fine. People learn about the subject from both sides, not from a single person's opinion which might be biased. You research aspects of the subject you might not have. You also learn how to debate better in the future if you're debating against what you believe.
