    Israel probably helped start it. I wouldn't put it pass the Mossad to do this kind of thing. America probably helped as well since they have a lot to gain from another pro-american government in the middle east.

    I saw an article on them arming the rebels in Syria back when Gaddafi was still alive. I've also read that the US was funding the Libyan rebels for over a decade. So, it is likely that it has been been going on for a while.
