As the forum grows bigger, we will require more moderators. We don't know who these people will be from a year from now, but some of them are going to personally know another forum member. We must make sure that moderators don't give lesser punishments to forum members just because they know them personally.

I address this because of what I have seen on the forums lately. Chealsea keeps saying that Ler is a good person IRL. I'm pretty sure Ler is a good person, but he gets into some trouble on the forums. I am sure that Chealsea doesn't allow her personal relationship with Ler to interfere with giving him proper punishment, but that doesn't mean every moderator will act like Chealsea. Future moderators will give lesser treatments to people they personally know and we need to moderate that and possibly put restrictions on it in the future as we expand.

Also, when I use the term "personal relationship", I mean that you know the person beyond what they post on the forums.

And how would you want to prevent this?

If anything this would be preferable, as it would prevent some of the impersonality of a larger forum. And the probablity of us knowing each other is pretty minimal anyway. Although for all I know, I may well have walked past say, C_G last time I was in Manchester. You never know...

I think we can assume the mods are, and will remain unbiased in their judgement. While Chelsea indeed defended Ler based on things beyond the forums, this didn't reflect in the eventual punishment whatsoever.
Even when it's the case that a single moderator's judgement will be clouded by their personal relationship to someone, there's still the rest of the moderating team.

While I understand your concern, I think the moderators are perfectly capable of preventing such a thing to happen.

I haven't thought intensely on the issue because it is not apparent yet, but here is the basics.
I think there should be a rule that moderators have to follow where they cannot let personal relationships to interfere with mod duties. The main thing is punishment. I know there is a group consensus on dealing punishment to people, but if a moderator tries to give a lighter punishment to a member who broke a rule, then that moderator is stripped of moderator status for a short period of time. If this is repeated, a more serious punishment is given to the mod up to permanent removal of mod status. When I say light punishments, I mean giving a punishment that is lower than what the constitution states or not giving a punishment at all. There also has to be a relationship between the mod and the member who is being punished.

I will think of a more thought out version of this later.

First of all who is Chealsea? If you're referring to me then you're damn right I would never let my relationship with Ler interfere with my moderating duties. Even a friend I would warn if they broke the rules. There is nothing wrong with expressing friendship or supporting friends in debates. Has little to do with actually moderating. When punishments are given they are debated upon by the entire staff. If it is deemed unfair it is not what we do. We can't and wont give out punishments or withhold them due to personal relationships. Also Fey is right, how would you enforce this?

    EDIT:
So just because we're friends with them that means if we don't think a more extreme punishment is fair we should be stripped of our positions? Every situation has to be looked at individually to determine what is fair.

The current mods yes. But future mods are uncertain. I expect 10 new mods in the next year if the new youtube channels gets up and the community increases.

Chelsea is without a doubt the most kind of the Moderation staff, and she does a hell of a lot of work trying to keep these threads and this forum running within the rules.

Pedro is one of our calmest and greatest intellectuals on the forums. He will assure that most threads will not escalate into a massive, heated argument in which somebody eventually gets a warning or possibly a ban whenever he is online.

Stalin and Uni think of many ways to balance and simplify the forums, and their effects in the future can, and will be, for the better and can compensate for the increase in members.

With these people here, we are just fine. As long as the rest of the moderators are more active, and do more stuff (talkin' to you, Noel...) we should be just fine, we don't need any more moderators.

Alex Tran, please man, it was a simple, and harmless joke. We do this kind of crap here every freaking day, please stop taking this seriously. Also, I tried posting this on the thread that you made about banning Ler, but Pedro snapped it before I could post. So...

Also, his avatar is hilarious and you should be able to tell from that, that he is merely playing around.
