No, I would say the reason that we don't have more political prisoners is because we have freedom of speech.

The only thing I'm saying is our country doesn't value free speech when it comes down to it. It has no morals or ideals it's just a thing looking out for it's own interests. Just like the rest of us. Bradley Manning is just a prime example of this.

What I am saying is that we are a heck of a lot better than China, North Korea, and Iran. You agree, yes?

Yes of course but that's only because we have good lives and a decent living standard. If we all become a bunch of poor angry bastards then we would be in the same situation.

I guess since we're such free speech haters we would surely lock up the Westoboro Baptist guys for not only voicing extremist views, but anti government views.... O wait, the Supreme Court actually ruled that protesting funerals for political reasons is okay... http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/10pdf/09-751.pdf

The Westboro Baptist church does not matter and poses no threat to anyone least of all to the state mostly because everyone thinks their crazy and rightfully so. If they did pose some sort of threat I tend to think somebody would do something about them.

Wouldn't a state concerned with restricting speech try to restrict speech that was not only against it (the state) but it's soldiers. You can hardly imagine the Nazi's allowing a group like Westboro to protest it.

Bradley Manning violated a specifically signed contract with specifically laid out penalties. Even if the information he dolled out wasn't sensitive in nature, and didn't have a potentially adverse affect on American security, the fact is he violated a contract he voluntarily signed. Speech isn't 100% free in contemporary society, and when you enlist in the military you're placed under even further restrictions which are part of the agreement you sign with the state. Using him as an example of how the average american's speech is restricted just doesn't hold much weight.

It isn't about restricting Free speech it's about protecting their interests. Most people's speech does not matter and it doesn't matter how radical it is because it poses no threat to the government or their interests at large. Nobody cares about the common person so they don't censor their free speech because they don't have too. America has censored free speech in the past when it suited them and they will continue to do so. The reason they fucked over Bradley Manning is because he got in their way. They are making and example out of him so nobody thinks about doing it something like that again.

They're prosecuting him because he violated his contract. He isn't the first person to have divulged state secrets and been punished. If they were trying to "make an example of him" wouldn't they want a more public and speedy trial?

Yeah and he deserves a life sentence in a maximum security prison (which is probably what he's going to get) for devolving state secrets which mean nothing and hurt basically no one. A more public trial would just cause a media firestorm and more ways for people to tell them how wrong they are. The sentence will be the example not the trial.
