    I am doing the best i can.
    i was in germany a few years ago. very few people knew any english because it was former east germany.
    i could just see their faces light up when i tried to speak german.
    i know very little german but at least i made an effort.

    Actually the understood "you" is the subject of the sentence so therefore it is proper grammar.

    You don't know about the understood you?! The understood you is used in mostly imperative sentences but is sometimes used in interogative sentences. For example: Go get me some fries! The subject of that sentence is the understood you. While it is not actually there it is still understood to be the subject of the sentence.
