But I am saying although it was considered, they would have not actually gone through with renouncing slavery for the very reason that it was the only issue that could not have been solved by compromise. They would have lost their reason to fight the war.

True, true. But if they did, and I'm not saying they would have, (and they didn't), they would have at least had a slightly larger chance of winning the war.

I don't believe either side was purely right or purely wrong. I sympathize with the south mostly and understand their grievances. At the same time you have to realize what Lincoln was dealing with and what a divided America would have led to. The war wasn't about slavery. That was just the straw which broke the camels back. On one hand you had the south who wanted states rights to be preserved and on the other you had a president who knew he had to keep this young country United and strong.

This post might have convinced me that you are not a troll after all.

Not at all, I don't believe this is any different than the others, although it would be very pathetic if he had no knowledge on the matter.

This one actually was a well thought out and nicely made point. Do not let your opinion of him cloud your judgement on every post he makes.

Although my views differ slightly (and by that I mean almost completely opposite) the post didn't really make any point to either side. He stated the obvious, and didn't take Slavery too seriously, basically calling it just a minor influence, which is pretty friggin' horrible to me. But, I suppose as compared to the rest of the participants in this lovely thread in which I somehow still receive notifications from, it was well thought out, wasn't it?
Also, I need to fix that...

It was bigger than he made it out to be, but it wasn't all that caused the war. Slavery is terrible, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't at all the major reason the war broke out. It was just the spark.

just wanted to say, if you guys want to read a really good book about what may have happened if the south won the civil war, the timeline-191/southern victory books are really really good and span a large amount of time.

Its a shame that if you ask the average person if they know who Harry Turtledove is they'll probably think you are making the name up.

Yeah, you would think with all the books he has written he would be more well known than he is. The books he writes about alternate histories really do seem plausible at times if you think it through.

    North Korea is best Korea!

On another note, we don't learn so much about the American civil war at school here in Norway so i know very little about it. Read a book about the war a long time ago though... think it was called "the magic tree house " or something. I never really got what the war was about besides that slavery business.

The magic tree house had a book where they visited the civil war?

Ah yes, the magic tree house series, I remember those, "The days of my youth, like the scent of a fresh lemon."
