The Lakota Independence Movement

Dude I'm part Chippewa! And we prefer to call ourselves Ojibwe.
I am descended from members of the Sault-St. Marie Tribe of Ojibwe in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My great-great grandmother was 100% native. That makes me 6.25% Ojibwe.

Well I don't care they call themselves Chippewa not Ojibwe. I also forgot to mention they are the richest natives in Canada. Your from a nearby but not as successful group.

Yes. They have tried to get independence a couple of times. They have tried the we were her first argument, it doesn't really work though since Norwegians have been in Norway since the ice age. The only place they can really use it is at the most northern tip of Norway. It's funny how some of them complain about their culture and traditions are being destroyed whilst they are herding their reindeer with helicopters and snowmobiles. Most laps have westernized a long time ago though, The highest concentration of Laps in the world is Oslo.

The Lapish rebellions in the 1700-1900 are an interesting read, also interesting is their short lived clash with the Vikings.

Like Stalin said, the Lappish culture is dead.

We can't change the past. What's done is done. To give land to the natives for something we didn't have control over is ridiculous. I didn't destroy their homes or take their land, my ancestors did and for me to have to pay for my ancestors crime is ridiculous.

But I do believe that we should stop interfering with them. Leave them be, let them keep living the way they want and stop trying to interfere with them. If they want more reservation land, let them have it.

Nah the Lappish culture is a stubborn old beast, it won't go out without a fight and the Lapps will make sure we know it... by mentioning it every 5 minutes.

What is so bad with making their reservations completely independent?

Because they really were supposed to be before, and the government has never respected that independence.

So now would be a good time to make up for that and actually respect it.

I doubt the government would ever want to give up any swaths of land, large or small.

But if we just give the reservations that the Natives are on now anyways away, we wouldnt really be losing anything in the means of territory.

But if we ever decided to dishonor the agreement, their being an independent state would cause more of an uproar then if they were just on a reservation.

Then don't think of it that way. Think of it as they live in the shittiest conditions anyone in America has ever had to suffer through, with a couple notable exceptions.

Im pretty sure we would honor the agreement this time around. We aren't Canada...

Let's just round them up and give them a disproportianately large nation in the middle of the desert somewhere, and kick the original inhabitants out. That should do the trick.

What state would we be best off without? California?
