Yes. Unlike other addictions, abstinence from heroine can seriously wear down on you physically as well as mentally. That's why there's some bad stories about people going cold turkey.
It's probably because he had something to live for. Most heroin addicts devote their entire lives to heroine and isolate themselves from friends and family to live in a stupor and they often get money for heroine from stealing shit. In that case, getting them off heroine is probably not going to work. However, if somebody has friends and family around them I reckon it would be far less harder to kick the addiction.

Edit: Not really addicted to anything. I mean i can stop smoking weed anytime i want to. I have been addicted to my pain medication once upon a time but that's all in the past now. That was a bitch to go off. I couldn't just stop so i had to take less and less. Never tried any hard drugs and i don't plan on doing so any time soon or ever for that matter.
