Summary: The Miami Marlins have suspended their manager for five games for saying he admires Castro. The manager then went on to make an apology at a press conference after the firestorm had already begun.

What do you guys think? Absolute Nonsense? Or should he have been suspended?

Remember the community of Miami is made up of a lot of Cubans who escaped from Cuba.

I think this is absolute politically correct nonsense and the guy shouldn't have had to apologize. He definitely shouldn't be punished for his personal views, he has a right to state them. We don't live in a Utopia. People say things that insult other people. It happens. Publicly humiliating him is stupid and not going to get anyone anywhere. Its just gonna put a tarnish on the guy's already tarnished reputation.

I'm going to go with the absolute nonsense option. They can suspend him if they want to, doesn't mean they should have. I realize that there are a lot of Cubans there. Their choice to suspend him or not to but I think people should be allowed to state their beliefs. If such beliefs make people dislike the coach then so be it but it shouldn't affect his job. I can understand they think they may lose fans here but I still don't think that's right.

As much as I disagree with his opinion, he has every right to state them. People reacting like this is foolish and counter-intuitive.

They had no reason to suspend him. It's discrimination based on his political views.

Exactly. We live in America, you're allowed to have different views than your managers.

Yeah, and your boss has the right to suspend you if he wants. Damn socialists misconstrue freedom.

Well yes, your boss does have the right to suspend you. Does that mean he should? If I was CEO of some random company, do I really have the right to suspend anyone I want to just because it hurt someones feelings?

    Yes.
Now if the government oppressed people for their beliefs, it would be different. Kinda. But if I run a business I can fire or suspend you for any reason I want.

Well it's a tough call. I mean fideel castro did allot of good in cuba but most Cubans in Miami dislike him. It was the wrong crowd to say it to. I know this is a bad comparison but it's like a Israeli football player said he admired Hitler.

    No, you can't.

Like Mosh said, this is America.
And the United States has laws against workplace discrimination.

Well that's stupid. And I would hardly call it discrimination, I don't think the reason they suspended him was due to his political beliefs, but due to the sensitive nature of his statements.

As Chives said, the US has all kinds of worker laws and regulations to keep people from being suspended or fired for little to no reason. My mum works in Hotels as a manager, shes the one that fires people. They give people at least 3 strikes, they can't just fire you.

EDIT: Although, he was not fired. And yes Shaw, he was suspended because of the sensitive nature of his statements.

    Tell that to the AFL-CIO.
And tell it to your boss who hates you the most.

Then decide how stupid business regulations and workers rights are.

It's more like an Israeli player saying he admires Jesus. I think that is a better comparison.

I think it is more like a Palestinian-Israeli Christian admiring any anti-semite at all.
