Stilicho was everywhere at once. He had nearly crushed all the strife and civil war, beat back the giant barbarian invasion with a few thousand men, passified Alaric, and even brought him over to his side, and only had one more obstacle to overcome, and that was triumphing over Constantine (the usurper in Gaul and Britain) (who he had actually known in person before Constantine rose to power). He nearly completely united the empire, but was killed due to the large anti-German sentiment that was being spewed up. Alaric actually became the new master general, and would have continued down Stilicho's road, if he had not been deemed an enemy of the state by Rome.

Anyway, I think the ROman Empire truly fell beyond saving with the sacking of Rome in 410. Before this when Stilicho was in power and when ALaric was suceeding him, the hope to save the Western half of the Roman Empires could never have been higher, and the prospects had not been as bright as it was at that point in a long time. After the sacking, Rome was never the same.

Its not news for me that the Romans traded with tribes in Mauretania, which is the farthest west place in Africa, so I wouldn't be surprised if roman traders ever came here, although they would simply die when they reached Brazil because our lands were full of cannibal tribes, lol.
Also there's lots of accounts of the Chinese reaching South America much before Columbus.

There aren't storms that take out boats like that in Brazil from what I know...so they probably got killed by native cannibals, lol.

In case they landed, then yeah, pretty much the natives and the local flora/fauna. With storm I didn't mean an epic tornado with lightnings and cows flying around :p Any storm can seriously damage a ship, and if the crew is tired and etc, shit happens. (I'm reading a lot from Patrick O'Brian lately)

If they did cross the entire ocean with Triremes, I pretty much doubt they would give up because of a storm. =P

I mentioned something about the Romans reaching America in a thread I made way back and everyone laughed at that idea.

Also, @thelisener , I bought How Rome Fell and Caesar: Life of A Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy. Do you know if they are good books?

I've seen a video from an university class somewhere in Spain, explaining that Rome fell, apparently, because of socialism (the teacher is a neoliberal and austrian economist, that explains it all)

    http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesús_Huerta_de_Soto That's the guy
