I know that you know some words in spanish at least, that allowed you to understand half of the phrase but you still missed things.

Well, I know..."si", and that's about how far I get on Spanish only. For the words I translated somewhat I used words from English and Latin that look and sound similar. Oh, and a few French words I randomly know, I guess.

Fact is...Latin derived languages are very similar if you look to them, exception is Portuguese and Spanish that look very similar. I don't know about Dutch and German, but they do sound similar as well.

Yep, the Roman languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian etc. (with Romanian being extremely similar) all derive from Latin, whereas Germanic/Nordic languages (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, German, English etc.) are more similar to each other, with the latter three having strong Latin influences.

Relied too much on foreign mercenaries. That eventually came back to bite them in the butt.

@GeneralofCarthage Edward Gibbon, a catholic (his father later forced him to go to a protestant school) was one of the first modern historians (late 1700's) to study and write about the fall of the roman empire, and arguably the most respected historian in this field, said that Constantine's conversion to Christianity was a bad thing. He said it caused too many people to withdrawal from public life and into unproductive seclusion.
