So Duke of Awesome inspired me to ask you all to post the kind of world you would love to live in. Your personal utopia. A place you believe would be better than our own world. Here's mine:
I believe in a world controlled under one flag, with a constitution (guaranteed rights), a democratically elected government, with control of major institutions by the government, allowing for smaller privately owned businesses. Social policies would include free housing (apartments), food (basic), free transportation, free healthcare, and free education (up to your bachelors). These benefits however would only be available to people who have a job (except for transportation, healthcare, and food), if you did not have a job you could apply to be assigned a job by the government with a government controlled institution (taking into account your education). You could leave this government job if you can provide proof you are going to another job in the next two months (government or private). There would be free trade, but it would just be trading within the nation as the nation controls Earth.

    Whats yours?

Oh cmon just post it. I don't want this to turn into socialism vs. capitalism. And it won't because this is personal opinions, not set definitions and goals. I don't care if you want a world with a new and heavily industrial British Empire, or a wonderful nomadic environmental utopia. Just post it, its interesting.

A utopian society is a distopian society.
What fun is there in health, safety, and abundance?

All right, it's just my spider instinct predicts a shitstorm. My "dreams" go more to a national level, I wish fot times where one does not have to worry if tomorrow will have a roof over his head, where you will know that you are going to have food in your table, where you will know that you won't be gunned down just for a couple of bucks, or where you will receive medical treatment no matter the cost.

Now that I reread it, sounds more like something a politican would say.

Well, politicians are sometimes right. Its just they usually say it just to pander, while want I want is actual beliefs.
Is that even possible? I'm pretty sure utopia and dystopia are opposites, but I can't be sure.
No, there's no reason for it to turn into one.

    Doublethink.

    Ignorance is Strength.
    Freedom is Slavery.
    War is Peace.
    Utopia is Distopia!

    Needs more science.

None of those three characteristics are specific to Utopia. A Utopian society is effectively a homogenized, static, empathy-free/emotionless society.

Dystopia is defined as a repressive state operating under the guise of a utopia.

And a utopia is any visionary system of political or social perfection. So...not quite opposites.

Yeah I know. I mean the definitions don't really cancel each other out, like many opposites do.

A world under one flag where we have the technology to create anything we need practically anywhere. No hunger no greed. Basically Star Trek minus the Borg as they tend to make people's day not fun.

A world before agriculture and civilization. I'm no longer impressed with what we have going on here.
