It is quite sad. Incidentally, the artillery also took the most horrific wounds in soldiers of the Civil War.

No. They had existed before, but the Civil War was the first time they actually fought against each other, for example the Monitor and the Virginia.

Technically, it was the first time they were used in war. But they had already been invented by the British and French.

Ah well, my knowledge of that period is not the best. My mistake.

Yeah the French and British had some that could theoretically cross the Atlantic. That is, if they didn't run into any waves over like 15 feet ;)

Well technically, this was the first time they were used in any sort of battle/engagement/skirmish/war.

Exactly. I believe a few nations had them, like the French and the British.

    Spanish probably had some too.

If the CSA got it, then the Spanish probably did too. They were still powerful back then, just not quite as much.

By 1862, only the French, British, Americans and the Confederates had ironclads. Not the Spanish.

I thought Taylor or Tyler was the head of the Union Artillery at Gettysburg?

Also a little guy named Napoleon might take offense with the artillery commnet

No, it was Hunt. He was pretty damn good. He rewrote the manuals, basically.

Nope, Hunt. Unless you were referring to Alexander, in which case Alexander did not have control of all Confederate artillery at Gettysburg.
That still wasn't really modern artillery though. The Civil War was transitioning to modern artillery. And the Franco - Prussian war was the first war in which almost everything was modern artillery. (everything of course referring just to artillery)

Though really Alexander should have been in charge. He was easily the best gunner on the Rebel side, and of course they had far worse artillery.
