I think this is bigger news than is being made out to be. I mean, regardless of which of the two win, it looks as if France is guaranteed to go socialist. From what I understand, both Candidates said they would pull out of NATO, and both pledged massive tax hikes on the Bourgeois. (Hollande promised a 75% tax rate on all those earning over 1 million euro, and Mellenchon 100% tax rate on those earning over 300'000 euro)

Edit: Hollande has won the first round of the election. - http://rt.com/news/france-election-results-turnout-681/

And coming in at fourth, just behind the conservatives, are the Communists. All in all, the four parties take up 84.77% of the votes, which says something about the political diversity of France.

I think this means that the communists in France actually got more votes than the Lib Dems did in the last election. Someone should put that on a poster. "The Liberal Democrats - Now 10% less popular than Communism!"

I think the great lesson from this first round of the presidential elections is the fact that political extremism are on the rise, and in a very important european country like france, that is bad. The nationalist party of the National Front (3rd place) and the communist coalition Left Front (4th place) are the clear representitives of this extremism.

Personally, I liked the candidate of the Democratic Movement (since it is more ideollogically closer to me).

Now with the 2nd round, it is the voters of the extremist parties who are going to influence who is going to be victorious. I want Sarkozy to win, because even thougth is imigration policy is so idiotic and his faction (which controlls the UMP, while there are is a more european-style liberal faction within the party) is conservative, I think having socialists rulling France will ruin the economy.
