Nazi Germany? To Hitler and the Nazis who thought like him that's exactly what they were trying to do, in their own twisted minds and ways.

The rule of thumb is pretty much, if you can think of something someone already wrote a novel about it. :p

I actually enjoyed the shit out of 1984. Haven't read Brave New World yet, but I intend to.

1984 wasn't a society intending to make a utopia though. The society was based around maintaining power for the Party.
Here's a quote that proves it:

"Winston... Winston. You know how the party keeps power, now tell me why."
"You are ruling us for our own good, because we are not fit to govern ourselves."
"That was stupid Winston. I want intelligence. The Party seeks power for its own sake. Not as a means, but an end. Power over the human mind and power over all. Matter, climate, disease, the laws of gravity... Because we control the mind."

    It means I got scooped.

The initial goal of the revolution was to create a perfect world. The book illustrates this plan going to shit by explaining what happened to the original founders of The Party.

I want to live in a world where freedom of expression is actively encouraged and advancement is based purely on merit. I want to live in a society where hard work is rewarded and necessities such as food and healthcare are available to all. I want a government where everyone in parliament is democratically-elected including the head of state.
If I were in charge however, I would want a government that is completely repressive and totalitarian. Any dissention should be dealt with in the harshest, most brutal way possible. All media should be controlled by the state, and advancement shall be based purely on how loudly they can praise the head of state. And any crime committed against the God Emperor, as the head of state shall be known, will carry an automatic sentence of 70 years hard labour in the uranium mines without the possibility of parole.

I sadly agree, you can't have both a meritocracy and a representative democracy, and though I sometimes am tempted to the idea of meritocracy, I'm still a firm believer in representative democracy.
