Well, Firemen & Policemen do jump in front of bullets & run into burning building & kill themselves to save infants...

I don't think lions or owls ever had a world war. We don't have a military to kill other humans so we can eat them (most of the time).

When I say country, I am refering to the people of that country. Most german soldiers were hereos(most had nothing to do with the warcrimes that the nazid carried out), they were fighting for their nation, or more likely the fellow soldier next to him. Brevik killing all those kids, and a soldier going into battle are two serperate things all together. For one the reason they are willing to risk their lives matters. On one hand, you have soldier who believes in putting his life on the line and going through hell and yes kill for his country or the guy next to him. Then you have brevik, who killed defensless kids because he does not like foreigners. Do you see any difference here?

Why do you have to use the argument of lesser evil? Why can't everyone live together just happily with rainbows and kittens :(.
You may be right but why make war look positive (more so) by making some of the driving force behind them heroes?

Im not saying the generals leading the operations are heroes. I am saying the ordinary soldiers who don't choose what their operation is, and have to do as they are told, even if that means blatantly walking into an ambush, are heroes.

Yes I understand that but giving the ordinary soldier hero status doesn't help prevent war.

When did I ever say it helped stop war. You are never going to stop war. There is nothing you could do to stop war except going to war and nuking the world.

You miss the point. Giving the normal soldier heroism status makes war more viable therefore leading to more wars.

That doesn't make any sense. How could they be heroes if they didn't chose to do it, and are only following orders?

Due to the high militarization of the US, being a soldier there instantaneously gives you some "prestige".

Really? I feel uneducated now, thank you.
I only thought they had some few people who really believes propaganda and that no one really cares about them.
    Do they really get prestige?

Well, that's kind of a specialty of this forum.
I agree. And those that do so ARE real heroes. But the majority of them do not do that, now do they? Are you telling me the majority of police are killed jumping in front of bullets or even wounded doing do? Are you telling me the majority of firefighters have run into burning buildings to save infants on the 3rd floor? No, they haven't. There is nothing heroic about cleaning up a car wreck or writing someone a ticket.

Which is insane and shouldn't happen. Soldiers aren't any better than doctors, lawyers, judges, politicians, or managers.

Well, that's not true. The way to stop war is, bear with me, I know this is going to sound insane, NOT FIGHTING WARS OVER STUPID THINGS. Just because the US is one of the most powerful countries in the world doesn't give us the right to go to war with whatever piss pot excuse of a country was home to a few terrorists that attacked us.

Also, @slydessertfox, you continue to use examples from D-Day and Iwo Jima. Guess what? There were, in my opinion at least, a hell of a lot more heroes in WW2 than we have now. First, we had millions more men in the war. We lost more troops on Iwo Jima alone then we've lost during our entire war in Afghanistan. Not to mention, American soldiers during WW2 weren't bombing trucks from 200 miles away and then being called heroes. No, they were facing off with a massive and extremely well dug in Japanese force. And they were actually facing them, not hiding in giant tanks that could roll right through a large house. War has changed, and we call more people heroes now for doing lesser deeds.

I think he was trying to say that saying a soldier is a "hero" makes people want to join the armed forces, which could lead to more wars.

Anyone who fights for their country in a time of crisis such as the German troops at Berlin or the Americans on Iwo Jima are all considered heroes. What sly is trying to say, is that the soldiers that die for their country are heroes.

Also @General Mosh You are an attention whore.

    You're one to talk.
So by your logic, a green recruit who died in the first week of the war because he didn't know not to stick his head above the trenches is on the same level as a guy who throws himself on a grenade to save his squad?

I never even suggested that. I was saying that to remind you not to lump every Fireman & Policeman together.
