Hero is a word that is VERY open to interpretation. Because, following the second definition, almost everyone is a hero.

Basically, a hero is whoever anyone thinks a hero is. Everyone has differing opinions on who is a hero. To most, a hero is a soldier, to others, a soldier is a villain. Like you said, its open to interpretation, rendering this whole argument pointless.

So I'm attention-seeking for refusing to call soldiers who have done nothing important heroes? I'm sorry, just because they're fighting for some perceived notion of freedom, doesn't mean I'm going to call them heroes. As Sly said, a hero is someone YOU think is a hero, and I refuse to think all soldiers are heroes. 1. A soldier who jumps on a grenade to save foreign civilians.
2. A soldier relaxing at a base who dies instantly from a sniper shot.
3. A soldier who guns down civilians and is shot by enemy combatants.
