I can't say it was much of an honourable defeat anyway. It was quite shameful, the guy was wearing full armour and had a shield and ended getting his ass handed to him by a dude with normal clothes and a sword. It looked like a pretty painful way to die as well, so yes, I'd rather live longer and die a peaceful death.

For instance, if there's a small army in a castle that could hold out against an army that is significantly larger, is the honourable thing to do to face them in an open battle and then get slaughtered, leaving the city undefended and the civilians vulnerable? Of course, it doesn't matter what happens to them, at least you get a heroic and honourable death, so who cares if a bunch of people get slaughtered anyway?

And it's sad before, but I'll say it again, stop throwing around the word "cynical" around when it isn't applicable. I'm being realistic, and the reality is that honour, in a large majority of the cases, can only hold people back or have a negative outcome. And that guy might be a scumbag, or live in shame, but at least he's alive, and willing to anything to keep it that way.

I can recommend it. It finally does away with the bullshit fairy talk you generally see in medieval fantasy, and the acting is very good.

Hmm, I wasn't suggesting this at all - Mr Bean is in fact one of my favorite comedies and I revere Shakespearean literature. These are two examples of content however - what I'm arguing is the need to analyze Rowan Atkinson and Shakespeare in their various ideological contexts, and analyze the institutions that distribute their material. Doing so will allow us to understand their motivations and reasons for producing what they do. Such information is essential on order for a society to properly establish a set of values based on reasoned and logical dialogue.
