TPP: The secretive agreement that could criminalize Internet use in Canada

Big Media lobbyists in Canada are making agreements with Candian politicians behind closed doors that may dramatically affect how canadians use the internet. All without even consulting the Public. Very worrying news.

It's common knowledge that Canada is a corporatist dystopia.

Actually it's an international agreement not just Canada the Canada part is referring to C-11. If that passes the Conservatives just shot themselves in the head even though they already did it with retirement.

Don't get worked up about it Spencer. This kind of thing happens every time a bill goes to committee in the US Congress. Everyone assumes that everything bad will happen, and won't just wait.

On a more positive note, the Pirate Party in Germany is doing quite well.

Is this their campaign slogan by any chance?

I would be disappointed if it wasn't.

It should become a law that any party that has the name pirate in it has to use this as their campaign slogan.

I'm not very familiar with the Canadian parliamentary procedure, however I think the crux of the article was to point out the amount of leverage that powerful media lobbies have to influence the types of legislation introduced into the parliament - Not only in Canada, but around the world. It's especially threatening when you think that the counter weight to such lobby groups are relatively weak in North America (I'm not too sure about what digital rights organizations there are in Canada, but small non-profit organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation are competing with massive record company lobbies in the US).

Furthermore, I think the SOPA movement failed miserably in the sense that it did not address the source of the problem. The core of the issue isn't the bill itself, but rather, the small concentration of politicians who continually develop and push such legislation through congress and the senate. Without removing these individuals from the political process, SOPA and other such legislation have always been, and will always continue to be a threat. Such attempts have been made in the past PRO-IP, ACTA, PROTECT IP, etc and some have not only past but had serious consequences. The Case in point is the DMCA act of 1998 which shut down Megaupload and effectively censored a significant portion of the web - Megaupload was the 13th most visited website in the world (50 million visitors daily) - with the legislation outlawing 25 petabytes of shared information. What's more is that the U.S legislation was enacted on a German Citizen in a foreign Country (New Zealand).

The same people are now pushing through CISPA which has serious implications for erosion of basic privacy rights of people across the world. Again, the issue isn't so much to stop such legislation from passing, but stop the politicians who push for such legislation, and furthermore secure legislation that protects the rights of the majority internet users.

The TTP is supported by american companies if anyone would like to read it again to confirm. However i am really disapointed that this is coming to my country. I say by next election the NDP will be the elected party.

Like I said before it's an international agreement and I don't believe it has been signed yet.
