We could start discussing Star Trek if you like. Perhaps Star Wars if we're desperate.

True true, but even if they get to mine only 10% of that asteroid, they will make shit ton of money. And if the material is contaminated on its way back to earth, either two things happens

    1. They find a new way to transport the minerals back to earth with out contaminating them

    Or

    2. They just stop, highly unlikely but might happen..

But it is the people, not private industry, that votes politicians in.

    You're very suspicious of politicians.
I might be naive, but surely to have dedicated their lives to politics and their people, they must at least have some sense of responsibility to look after the best interests of their citizens, in the long term as well as the short.

Not true of all of them, of course.

I believe that a lot of politicians do think that and do feel they have a responsibility to their constituents but definitely not all. I think it's fairly safe to assume that you believe there are evil people in this world, just look at Hitler or Stalin. If there are evil people, then the first thing they'll want is power over other people. The easiest way to do that is the government. I'm not saying the government is evil. Anyone who believes that entirely is just delusional. However, anyone who isn't suspicious of their government is delusional as well. It has a lot of power over us average Joes and that power can be used for good or evil. I just worry that they'll use it for the latter, not the former.

    Enjoy your paranoid life.
I don't think suspicion is the right frame of mind to be in. You mustn't be blindly obedient and trusting, of course, but suspicion is taking it too far, and sounds too much like conspiracy-theory territory to me.

I'm not looking over my shoulder. The government isn't trying to arrest me. I'm not the paranoid hobo on a street corner with an aluminium foil hat. I think suspicion is the perfect mindset. It motivates you to scrutinize every law that's up for discussion. It encourages you to question the political beliefs of others and even yourself. Maybe suspicion has too negative a connotation but I've never been too big on labels.

Yeah, I guess it's just different interpretations of the word suspicious.
I would advocate scrutinising laws and the like, but the point where you believe the government must be out to get you is too far.

I don't think the government is out to get the general citizenry, they just want more power, which comes at the cost of said citizenry.
