Alternatively, the Scottish model: the state pays the upfront cost and you repay with no interest when and if you are earning above a certain amount.

p.s. This isn't to say its perfect, students still have to pay for things like accommodation while learning, for food, for books etcetera and I often find my Student Loan and SAAS grant fails to cover this, resulting in a Bank of Mum and Dad solution that really is unacceptable.

    Alternatively, Anarchy.

More temporary, make the national government seize state schools and have both national and state gov subsidize schools to the point where its free.

It fails to explain how this makes college more affordable...its just explaining how it makes it more efficient....

I always thought Scots got free University, but ah well, I was clearly ill informed.
It seems the only difference is that you pay interest in England.

Also, while I think it is important to keep college affordable, as the OP states, I also think trying to make too many savings and making an 'efficient' system can often lead to a drop in the quality of education. I am not saying this would be the case if it worked out perfectly, but when you start making saving they can often go too far and harm the service.

It's as free as the NHS, when I say pay it back I mean taxes.

Ah, I see. So do Scots pay higher taxes than in England?
    Somehow I doubt it.

We make up 8% of the population, consume 9% of treasury spending and provide 10% of total treasury income via taxes of different types. Excluding gas and oil which is placed in the offshore revenues section.

    Well, fair enough then.

Also, just out of interest, do you support Scottish independance? That probably deserves its own thread, however.

Almost certainly it does. Short answer: yes. Long answer: Yes, but as a means to a more fully integrated EU.

    And, "independence", btw.

Haha, are you filling in for Kali now?

And do you want to make the thread, or shall I? I would dearly like to tell you what I think of the EU.

From the looks of it I am guessing you don't like it very much.

Mostly just the way it has been done, I'm not neccessarily against European countries working together.

I think the European Union is fine except for a couple of major flaws.

With all these Americans around, tonight has been the only time I've felt even remotely conservative.

But again, I think some kind of EU could work, but there are some things they need to change. The Euro obviously being the first of these.

    @slydessertfox
You would if some strange commision in Europe was telling you what shape your cucumbers had to be.
