Yes or no for an Independent Scotland?
I saw this a while back, and someone brought it up recentely on a thread, so I decided to just make a thread for it.

The UK should take a lesson from Canada and Quebec.

Well despite being a republican and supporter of the EU, i'm against Scottish independence. I mean, if they get independence, they're not even going to get rid of the Queen! I thought the merging of monarchies was a key part of the Act of Union.
If you ask me, I think Scotland gets a good deal out of the current devolved system, unlike say, Northern Ireland.

...Didn't we already do this a couple of weeks ago?
Whatever, I'll say it again. Self-determination.

I'm all for it, just hope they get rid of the monarchy though.

Agreed, I'm not sure it would be in their interest to become independent.
They would basically have slightly more autonomy than they do now, but with vast amounts of new expense.

There are also some important issues noone has resolved, such as Alex Salmond himself doesn't know what currency an independant Scotland would use.

Scotland, in the 1700's, voted to join the UK. It should have the right to leave and be independent and stuff like that.

Unlike the Southern States of course muhahhahhahhhhaha.
Anyways the people voted for the withdrawal of UK I think anyways.

Scotland and independent are mutually exclusive, too bad most of the U.K's industrial centers are in England :(

That reminded me to revive the Scottish monarchy, so I searched Last King of Scotland, lol there is a movie about an African tyrant.
Apparently Scotland deindustrialized in the 1970's-1980's.

I don't feel that the timing is right for that to happen now.

When there ready. I do not think Scotland is prepared. Perhaps in a time of economic prosperity when this maybe simpler. England also gives a lot of money to Scotland and I think there should be more industry in Scotland.

No they didn't, the majority of Scottish people don't want independence (accoring to polls)

Scotland would not do well as an independent country. Its economy would quickly crash and burn, and they would all of a sudden be begging for loans and stuff from England. Scotland is pretty autonomous already, and its not like there is too much of a movement for them to be leave the United Kingdom. I don't think Scotland should ever really get independence unless a very solid majority of the country wants it.

Also, its times like this when I miss Toast :(

I would like some sources on these claims. Do any economists really say this, and don't you think the Scots have considered this themselves?

Scotland does not have much industry at all, and their economy would rely on farming and tourism.

That's what I'm worried about, that and I doubt they would bother to make themselves a proper independent country. I'm sure they would rely on England for military, diplomatic services, currency etc. but they wouldn't have to pay for it.
Already they get far better services and privalages than English people do, I'm fairly surprised we're not kicking them out of the Union anyway.

I agree. They have a very good deal as part of the Union, I can't imagine why they would want to leave. I say, if they get full independence then they should also have to create their own fully functioning economy, military, diplomatic infrastructure, etc.
