I was wondering, what would the soviet union been like if Lenin didn't die in 1923 instead 25 years later in 1948. After all 53 is kinda young. This is also on the assumption that he stays in power. No, other assumption.

I am divided on the subject but as of right now, so I had to ask the forum folk seeing as your all wise sages. It would be interesting seeing as though the 20th century is now fucked in history.

    What do you guys think?

Edit: Can somebody fix the poll so it says "Would the soviet union do better?"

Wouldn't be as heavily industrialized as it was under Stalin but would probably be more open to other countries but there would still be purges of suspected anti-communists just not to the degree of Stalin

Being more openness with other countries one must wonder how WWII would have gone down, diplomatic wise.

My guess is that the Soviet Union would have stayed neutral but definately would have kept a close eye on Germany and make preparations for any possible attack.

Well the meeting Hitler and Stalin before they invaded Poland is now fucked. Who knows what Lenin would do.

I don't think he would of signed the non-aggression pact, maybe taking Hitler's anti-communist/slavic rants seriously and probably would have intervened when Germany invaded Poland, obvoiusly not wanting to give Germany a springboard for a possble invasion

The only intervention Russia ever gives Poland is invasion. Therefore, he would've done nothing, or the same as Stalin. And without the 5-year plans happening as they did, I predict absolute victory for the Fatherland! But then i'm probably slightly biased 'cos I don't particularly like Lenin. Much preferable to Trotsky though, I don't get why he gets to be seen as number #3 so to speak.

That was the only version I could find that has an English translation within the video itself.

And here's one for the Stalin fans. Also sung by Ernst Busch.

Lenin would have been much like Stalin. But what would have happened to Stalin? Would he have waited and maybe taken power still? Or would he have tried to seize power? Or would he have not gone down in history as anything at all, just being a minister who did nothing important?

Well it was because of Lenin that Stalin had any clout within the party so if Lenin had stayed in power I think Stalin would'nt have the balls to try anything and if he did I'm not sure it would have worked or Stalin would play his chess game and install "yes" men until Lenin died or he just Couped that shit up

Stalin made the USSR what is is remembered as today. I'm all for Lenin, but he lacked the brutality and strong personality and drive that Stalin did. Stalin was a hands on man, Lenin was nothing but an (incredible, albeit) armchair activist, he had no business leading a nation through a World War. This is not to say that his contributions meant nothing, just that he lacked the tenacity. Had Trotsky taken power as Lenin desired the world would have been a bloody mess and the new Soviet Union would have never been. Stalin was the great leader. It was all downhill from there.

Trotsky was never Lenin's first choice, at least I hope not.
While I agree that without Stalin, the USSR would never have survived WWII, the world turned out to be a bloody mess anyway.

Trotsky was who Lenin intended to stand in his shoes but Stalin was winning the favor of everyone in the party, due to gaining seemingly unimportant papers from Lenin. He controlled who was in and out of party as to put everyone in his favor. He eventually took power by siding with the Politiburo in every debate which weeded out the bad seeds. Trotsky was the intended successor. Thankfully, he was not. The only thing I hate more than Social Democrats and Liberals are Trotsky fans. Bleh.
