I read this interesting article today

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/02/us-usa-campaign-colorado-idUSBRE85109120120602

I want to know what you guys think about it. Could legalization of weed be a factor in the US 2012 presidential elections? I think, after reading this, it could be important in some states, but not all of them. However, it appears both candidates are against the legalization of cannabis, does anyone think either candidate might make some concessions on the legalization of weed?

There is a Colorado ballot initiative that would legalize possession of up to an ounce of weed for recreational use, which will go directly against federal law which classifies cannabis as an illegal narcotic. So, it will be legal in Colorado if the ballot initiative passes and the federal government doesn't crack down on it.

No, I do not think that the legalization of marijuana will play any significant role in the 2012 election.

I really don't think it's going to be that big of a factor in the 2012 election.

Unless you are a pot head, how can this be an important topic in an election?
Unless of course, the majority of Americans take weed, which for some reason I doubt.

Because it would weaken the cartels and less people would die.

But this one may be the most used and least dangerous, it will also hurt the cartels profits really bad.

    Well then, forgive my ignorance.

I would also dispute whether in the long run legalising weed would harm the cartels (as people look for harder drugs) but I suppose that is a different argument.

There are other factors, like more tax revenue, hurting drug cartels, relieving overcrowding in prisons, etc.

I have to agree legalization won't be a big deal on a national scale, but in some states it may be a small factor. However, if both of the candidates are against legalization I don't see it becoming anything more than a small factor for a low percentage of Americans. But if one of them came out for legalization, it would all of a sudden become a big deal.
