It was his political party at the time. Everything he did was in the name of the Republican Party. You can debate his actions weren't Conservative, but regardless they were under the Republican Party, under a Republican President.

True, but Republicans back then were just as left if not more left than modern day democrats.

I fully understand that & agree with you a great deal. However his actions despite being "leftist" were under the Republican banner & therefor Republican.

    James Buchanan. Period.

One of the most incompetent presidents of all time. If the U.S. had something like a Neville Chamberlain, Buchanan would be the closest. Chamberlain, at least, was an appeaser. Buchanan did virtually nothing on the eve of the Civil War. He had neither the talent nor the leadership to confront this catastrophe. Buchanan is up there with Van Buren, Harding, Coolidge, Pierce, Hoover for almost complete incompetence, IMO. Just how bad was Buchanan? Even the White House's website calls him a horrible, ineffective president.

He wasn't bad. I mean sure the watergate was pretty bad but as far as his actions in leading the country he was pretty good imo

Except for also possibly sabotaging peace talks in Vietnam to help him win the presidency, causing the war to go on. A war that was in my opinion possibly the worst we have ever fought. Nam was a fucked up war, our own soldiers being hit by agent orange or napalm, some going completely mad from the war or turning to drugs and all for nothing. Not counting the things that happened to the Vietnamese people. Nixon was a horrible president, any president who will use his position for personal gain at the cost of the country is a horrible president.

Sabatoging peace talks? Wasn't he the one that ended the war? Sure you"re not mixing him up with Johnson?

Yes I am sure. Yes he did end the war but he was accused of sabotaging the peace talks years earlier during the elections.

No charges were ever pressed but with Nixon it's certainly not hard for me to believe that he would do that to win the election. Even if he didn't and I don't claim 100% that he did I still feel that Nixon was a horrible president.

From the wiki, although this is not where I first heard about this I don't feel like looking anything else up right now.

Claimed sabotage of negotiations by Nixon campaign

Prior to the 1968 U.S. presidential election, some commentators have concluded from statements of President Johnson and other contemporary players, the Richard Nixon campaign set out to sabotage the Paris peace negotiations on Vietnam.[1][2][3]According to this account of events, representatives of Nixon privately assured the South Vietnamese government that an incoming Republican administration would offer them a better deal than would a Democratic one, and the South Vietnamese withdrew from the talks on the eve of the election, thereby disrupting the peace initiative on which the Democrats had based their campaign.[4][5][6]Before the elections, President Johnson suspected Richard Nixon of political sabotage that he called treason.[7][8]However, no one was criminally charged in the matter.[9][10][11]

But other than that, he wasn't a shit president. Besides, I hardly doubt we should count something he did before he was president as a reason he was a bad president. Using that same logic, Herbert Hoover is probably the best president.

Richard Nixon was in it for Richard Nixon. Yes it was done during the presidential elections, before he was president but it's about the fact that Nixon was out for personal gain and I find that to be an absolutely horrible trait for a president. That is why it is relevant.

I've always thought that Richard Nixon was a good president, at least in terms of Foriegn Policy, but an awful human being.
