ever since the cold war and possibly even before, my fellow americans have labeled anything and everything as socialist/communist, especially social programs. So the question of how to introduce social programs such as governmentally sponsored healthcare, unions and collective bargaining, and financial aid for the poor is a very difficult question to answer. and so I would like to ask the great community here at the forums what their opinions are on this.

If you want social programs then pay for them yourself, don't rob you're neighbor.

America is a backwards country and I feel sorry for people who live there.

I agree with the OP. America needs to get over its obssession with communism before it can introduce any of these reforms.

But wait, America does have unions, right?

Yep. But public sector workers aren't allowed to strike or something. It's like fucking Nazi Germany up in there.

McCarthyism still runs rampant here. It is frowned upon to be even a social liberal or semi-socialist such as myself.

As for the OP, social programs will not be put into place in America for as long as Europe is failing.

Oh Jesus Shit, that's.. wow.. I don't even..
    How.. but.. why.. but.. what?
That's like the development of India/10.

Having said that, I don't agree that social reforms are 'good' and American capitalism is 'bad'. Although I know which one I'd rather have.

But in all seriousness I don't understand why Americans have a problem with programs such as universal healthcare. I've talked to many people with universal healthcare (even are own leader) and all of them have said great things about it. Do like Americans think that universal healthcare will take away their freedoms or what?

Yep. It'll also create a huge fissure across the land, from whence shall come an army of islamo-bolshevik dragons. Only small government can prevent this catastrophe from occurring.

    It is known.

Am I the only one that remembers we have social security, unemployment, welfare, and an expansive network of unions for most occupations. With the exception of the nursing industry, just about every non unionized job is already more or less inline with what could be considered just compensation. People forget that unions were created to prevent the 80 hour work week, working conditions like found here and to make companies pay a liveable wage. You can argue the minimum wage is low, but compare it to pre unions, when you had companies paying you in company dollars a year that could only be spent in stores owned by that company. Also contrast the way Scott Walker handled the unions in Wisconsin to 19th century Pinkerton's and I'd say American workers are doing just fine.

The whole opposition is based on two things (just for reference, I wouldn't be opposed to a well run universal healthcare system): 1st, universal healthcare places too much government control over an individual's physical welfare (more so than regulations on controlled substances, please don't bring them up). The second idea is that part of individual freedom is freedom to choose not to help others if you feel that it is more beneficial too look out for onself. The first is the most common in my experience.

    Edit:
    Also, this too.

Yes, it is. Especially in schools. We learned about communism and socialism in school and the teacher taught us that communism does not promote equality and she also told us communism is in fact fascism under another name. I asked her if she had been taught by McCarthy and she sent me down to discipline.

    Wow that's terrible.
Having a balanced view is always better. Hell, we spent weeks studying the positive parts of Nazi Germany and Stalins Russia. There were quite a few.
