We would have never done that. We spent a day on the Soviets and the entire time it was the teacher explaining to us why communism and socialism are authoritarian and never work.

EDIT: I agree with Pedro, but I think this thread is not so much about the social policies and stuff rather than the way almost all American are opposed to anything that could be considered so much as slightly socialist or social liberal.

Thats just your teacher bro. I was taught the basis of both the acceptance of capitalism and communism by a populous, and the various atrocities both committed.

Well, my teacher was the most insane history teacher ever. But that doesn't matter, because the worst part is a lot of other teachers felt the same way.

Depends on where you go, but even in 'liberal' California you won't find many people openly endorsing anything that opposes it.

The sad fact is that alot of the teachers that you see either were a part of or grew up under it. So they teach with it in mind to the impressionable students under their watch. Those students grow up to teach such to their children and other children (if they enter something like a teaching professsion). Thus, the cycle continues.

The more frustrating part of it is that the students are blatently taught to hate Communism and Socialism regardless of what it is meant to be. In what I have seen of teacher conduct on the subject, most teachers don't even bother to teach what it is. If you presented the system under another name as it was meant to be, you would probably find that most students would not recognize it and possibly even agree with many of the principles that it puts forth.

You see the problem most clearly in the political system present. The politicians throw the phrase 'Communist' and 'Socialist' around like AIDS at one another, even if the actions of the target in no way match the accusation. There are even instances where the actions outright oppose the description. Yet it is still used in such a manner.

The point being that McCarthyism is alive and well in the United States.

The people who support such social programs should take responsibility for them and pay for them themselves, instead of imposing their will upon others and robbing them of their money to support it under the guise of democracy. At the very least such programs should be the responsibility of local or state governments, since it's quite obvious that people from different places have different values and needs.

Whoah, McCarthyism, eh? Be careful now, thats a strong word you got there, but I wasnt aware that we are putting politicians on trial and removing them from office for having affiliations with the communist party. I thought such practices ended more than half a century ago.
