The point he's trying to make is (if im not mistaken): Giving poor people handouts will only prolong their lives, not actually save them.

Now, this can be true, but we should look at this case by case, we can't just generalize this.

Well, yeah, but he's hardly talking about charities like Cancer Research is he? It's more specifically a criticism of the kind of bullshit companies like Starbucks are peddling. And like he said, he's not against charity, per se, but recognises it's not a solution.

The guy in the movie didn't.
But the title of this thread is: "Why Charity Should Be Abolished"
Which leads me to believe that the OP is against Charity

I didn't take the time to watch the entire video because my attention span is not nearly long enough, but charity should definitely be abolished. At least in terms of efforts financially based.

"It's not what you're buying, it's what you're buying into."

    Best quote from that video.

Here's why I think charity doesn't work. If everyone in the US gave 1$ to a charity, then 300 million dollars would be raised. Unfortunately, all this money is spread out among thousands of charities. The charities aren't actually going to make much money unless a lot of people make sizable donations. The problem is people just stand back and say "Oh that's too bad" when a news report about starving children comes on and they will not do anything to help.

I didn't formulate that well enough. I'm sorry to have caused this misunderstanding

I meant that the guy in the movie didn't want Charity to be abolished.

Well financial support should be held by the government some charities, like Food banks, and shelters are extremely useful.

If there's 3 dollars in each McDonalds charity box and there's 3 boxes per mcdonalds and there's thoisands of McDonald's in the us, that equals a whole ton of cash going to the Ronald McDonald house DAILY.

What do they even do? And that's an exception, simply because so many people got to McDonald's every day. BUT, for most charities its a very different situation. You wanna tell me the last time you saw me call up a number and donate to someone after seeing a news report or commercial?

Yes, when that money is spread out so much then only a small fraction of those charities will get a lot of money and the rest will get a lot less.
You're telling me you can only name 2 out of 1.1 million?

I am against Charity in so far as it prolongs the symptoms caused by capitalism in the first place. Slavoj Zizek makes an excellent point about the George Soros paradox; how "he is repairing with the right hand what he ruined with the left". In other words, it is not excusable for say a philanthropist to - on one hand participate in a system that causes great wealth and great poverty at the same time, and then use the wealth accumulated to alleviate the issues of the poor. It is the system itself that needs to change, otherwise you are only prolonging the problem.

Take Cancer Charities for example, sure we can pour millions of dollars into such organisations that claim to 'fight for a cure for cancer' but essentially all the funds put into cancer research goes into developing state of the art drugs, that only serve to deal with the symptoms of cancer (i.e. prolonging the life of a patient at a significantly reduced quality of life). It is by design such charities focus on symptoms of the problem because to focus on preventing cancer in the first place would mean prohibiting the use of carcinogenic products, materials, foods, etc in Industry. It would essentially mean attacking the Industries that employ the people who donate to the organization - Such an approach is self-defeating although being the approach that deals with the problem at its root cause.

Except for developing new Kemo techniques and financial support, for cancer patients.
