Hi all; just making this thread to let out some steam.

So I am in Mississippi with my mom and brother for a couple of weeks to visit her family. Now, my maternal side are all devoted Christians, and they go to church whenever they can. They are the kind of devoted that would lead them to disown me if they knew how questioning I was about God. During the sermon, the pastor went over all the things in the perfect way so as to seriously doubt my faith. He went over how this country, US, is becoming sinful; by that he means cussing in all the medias, "sinful" clothing, and many other things. He also said that gay marriage shouldn't happen because the Bible says so.
    [IMG]my internal reaction.
He then started going on about how we shouldn't vote on the president depending on if he's Dem or Rep, but if he upholds the word of God
    [IMG]
Just let me tell you I was probably the only doubter in the service. It feels just, horrible not being able to talk with your own family on these kinds of things (my father would understand, and provide good discussion, but he had to stay in Houston because of his job).
So, I just wanted to let out some of the built up pressure.

Well this was really depressing to read when the pastor says to "follow" gods word should they also follow the murder the amalichites(spelling) or the part were you can hit your kids. I honestly dont know why religon has a place in modern society but I guess that freud was right(as he always is) when he said the illusion of religon will end once people are not afraid to die and of the unkown. There will however be relgion, in some form, for a very long time if not all time to come. Sorry in advance if I offend anyone I have no problem with you having your beliefs just don't tread on me

Why are Baptists in the US so fucking crazy? I used to go to a Baptist church here in England when I was a kid, and they were just the nicest people ever.

They aren't. The Baptist church down the street from my school provided the whole school with lunch every Wednesday.

No no, its not Christian people who are insane. Its Southern Fucking Baptists who are insane.

Those are the special needs morons who you see waving pitchforks at those who disagree with them and are found wantonly displaying their lack of reason in the face of skilled and well worded arguements. What the OP described is common amoungst all Baptist churches across the Southeastern United States. Getting worse the farther in you go, it reaches critical mass in the North Florida, Alabama, Southern Georgia area. Rural parts of Georgia and South Carolina are also just as bad, however certain parts are quite reasonable.

I don't get how the action of one individual would make you doubt your faith, you don't have to follow what one pastor has said.

But hey man you could always become a super religious asshole and piss the forums off because FUCK THEM.

    This is a generalization.

    *clap clap*

It's a religious area, there is no denying that. Go ahead and explain why it's such a bad thing.

You know, that's damn good to hear. See I always had plenty of respect for their beliefs. I've not been baptized myself, but I appreciate that they leave it until you're old enough to make the decision for yourself, rather than like the Church of England, where they often have you baptised as a baby before you're even remotely aware of what's going on.

I just want to make it clear that in Houston, we would go to a Presbyterian church. Also want to say I have been doubting the idea of God for a while now, my parents just make me go to church.

Indeed, I hope you're not looking for a trophy. I sounded quite belligerent in that rant now that I look at it, and shouldn't really be getting angry at minority sects that haven't really done me any wrong (besides the two or three that actually have). I however, have had a good deal of my time wasted by being engaged in angry back-and-forths between certain former family members of mine who were of a particular group of Southern Baptists who seem to resemble too many other groups of Southern Christians.

I was stating that the intensity of the dogma, over-zealousness, and in certain cases extremism of the region gets worse (i.e. more overbearing) the closer you get to that core region. I am saying that you see more of the "bad" types of Christians, if we may call the few ignorant minority groups of Christians, more frequently in that area than in other areas.

I've had a bit of bad experience with Southern minority sects of Christianity... a bad experience that pretty much defined the type of personality I have now and made me wary of Christianity in general. Am saying all Christians are bad, no. There are many good Christians who are tolerant and reasonable around the world and in the area I pointed to, I do however, have little patience for certain Southern sects of Christians.

Idiotic. I myself was baptized has a Catholic, but it was good enough to reach 12 years old to know that religion is fairy tales.

^We seem to agree, or at least I view many things about religion to be fairy tales.

I've unfortunately met one of those people Soviet Streltsky was describing, not fun to talk about religion with. I myself am a more open minded Roman Catholic, and I have had bad experiences with them. For example I told him that I don't believe in Hell and he went apeshit on me, calling me not Christian, saying I took half of Christianity and turned it into a religion (Ironic because that is basically what the Baptists did to the Catholics/other Christians). He also said that everyone that isn't Baptist goes to Hell.

You are in no position to say that.

We aren't a threat to everyone, intolerant assholes like you are a threat. I can stand atheists but not people like you who tell me I am a threat to others because of my religion. (I don't care if this counts as an insult) Fuck you, for your hate spewing words.
