A republic is any form of government without a monarch. North Korea is a republic, and the United Kingdom is a democracy. The two can be combined, but they don't have to.

That's more an oversimplification resulting from monarchy being the more prominent form of oligarchy historically wise than anything.

North Korea is an oligarchy, more specifically an autocracy.

Socially speaking the UK is democratic, but government wise "the public affair" (the law) takes precedence, making the UK a republic. Of course you could point out the existence of The Queen, but really classifying a government as a 'Constitution Monarchy' is no different than calling it a 'Fuck You Royal Faggots Monarchy'.

Representative government is pretty much universal in all republics.

It's what makes a republic. A dictatorship can also be a republic, as long as the head of state is not a monarch. Officially, the British head of state is the queen, so it is not a republic. It has nothing to do with democracy.

    Google definition of republic:

    Noun:
A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president...

That's just plainly wrong. There are not just two forms of government. North Korea is, as Demon says, an autocracy. The lack of a monarch only means that the country isn't a monarchy.

North Korea is autocracy there is no way around it. If you want to get more specific call it a military dictatorship with an autocracy as the head of state, although I highly expect that Un doesn't hold as much power as many would like us to believe.

It was an interesting thread, but you have no right to use free speech ever.
