Apparantly Argentinia haven't updated their forces much since the 1980's. Our ships and planes are some of the best in the world.
As long as we control the air field on the Falklands, we should be fine.

Oh please, Skyhawks and Mirages against Typhoons? It'd be like a Sopwith Camel versus a Mustang. Since 82, the UK armed forces have advanced about 60 years in sophistication, whereas the argies haven't changed a bit, save for the notable difference in that they no longer have the landing craft they had in 1982 which would make an amphibious assault impossible anyway. Air superiority over the islands themselves would be pretty difficult for them too, since we upraded our Rapiers in '92. Plus the graph isn't quite accurate - we actually have a number of nuclear subs in the area too, although the UK government refuses to admit it, everybody knows about it.

All pretty irrelevant though since not even the most frothing at the mouth revanchists in Argentina are dreaming of another war anyway. People seem to forget that when they invaded in the first place they were led by a junta that desperately needed to distract the populace from the failing economy. Right now, Argentina's a democracy, and has a very healthy economy. Their politicians will insist on stirring up the pot every time they get an excuse and they'll keep on making speeches to one another at their little South American congresses they have, but nothing will really change. The islands have long been a political scapegoat for Argentina's politicians, and at the end of the day they're probably more useful to them like that than if they were under their control.

Having said all that, in the 80's most South America countries were more on our side, partly due of course to the military rule in Argentina at the time.
Today, however, most of them support Argentina, America won't support us, and I doubt many other countries have the stomach for war.
We might find ourselves isolated if we continue to refuse to negociate.

Do you think 4 typhoons can face the entire argie air force? Secondly rest of that is true, but with out proper air force it would be hard fight. also if UK doesn't have air superiority your surface ships are fucked.

Just stall them until our carriers are finished, and then let them cry all they want since they won't be able to do anything about it. Personally, I'd refuse to negotiate with anyone who holds some iffy claim based on a 19th century treaty as of more importance than people's right to self determination.

And the hilarious thing is that THEY call US the imperialists.

@thelistener - You realise that the Argentinians actually only have 25 interceptor aircraft? And they're pretty much all from the 1970s? Honestly, I think those odds are pretty good. The difference between fighter jets is deceptive since they all essentially look very similar, but trust me, the Sopwith Camel/Mustang comparison is fairly accurate. And if 4 mustangs went up against 25 Camels, it'd be a slaughterhouse - just to give you an idea of what we're talking about here.

And this is the peacetime garrison. If shit was legitimately starting to hot up down there, we'd undoubtedly send a full squadron of Typhoons to the Falklands.

The Argentine fighter aircraft were given to Argentina after Israel upgraded their planes, in 1978.

    They have 22 fighter aircraft.

The FAA operates 243 aircraft of various types. This includes 22 fighter aircraft and 41 ground-attack aircraft.

    This is quoted from wikipedia.

What are 'cas planes'? Sorry, I don't know all that much about planes either.

Well, they could possibly put air-to-air missiles on them, but Eurofighter Typhoons are the best planes in the world. Those cas planes wouldn't stand a chance.

Well, that's possible, but Argentina won't be getting any. At least not for 50 years or so.

Also we need to take into account the economical and political impact of a war between the two nations, which country can outlast the other and which is more unstable and prone to disaster if the war drags on.

I really don't think that any future conflict would last any longer than the previous one. It's not as if the UK is going to launch an invasion of Argentina itself.

You've got to be kidding, right? What are we going to attack them with? The metropolitan police? We don't have enough manpower to invade Luxembourg, let alone Argentina.

I said I wouldn't be surprised if they did because I expect the unexpected to happen, not meaning they are going to do it or have the capability to do so.
