    The cities are automated to give as much as possible gold, your automaton workers will build trading posts around those cities. Conquered cities are (I'm not sure) usually automated to give gold. Due to your happyness problem, I wouldn't select standard automation, I'd select the 'no growth' automation. you need to place other stuff then tradig posts, like mines :P
