Charlie Chaplin eventually got arrested because of "Un-american thinking". This is similar to what happens in dictatorships.

He got arrested for giving a speech in the land of 'Freedom'.

The US practices Imperialism over other nations not through conquest, but other means. So I guess that what the OP said is valid.

Calm down, you can't take something that happened over 60 years ago and say it's an example of how freedom hating america is. It would be like me saying that since the UK controlled india around this time or that the french still had a big chunk of africa then they must still be imperialist assholes. Does not make sense.

I do, but this still is the way we should be. This is still the way we should act. This speach says that we all should be treated the same way. So take a look around you, do you see any of the ideas in this speech in practice?

I'm not completely able to answer as I've never been to America; the thing is that in those years, anything that were a little red was a free pass to jail.

Your op seemed to be more about how he was arrested and how america is evil then the actuall message of the speech.

Well the America of today is still shitty freedom side of things(Most of the republican policies and the bills geared towards the success of the wealthy for regulation of the people's shit aka SOPA PIPA etc.),not like France and Britain of today.

It was meant to clarify what happen afterwards, but if it causes confusion I will remove it.

I always liked that speach, but just as a fact Charlie Chaplin wasn't arrested. What happened is that in 1952 he left the US for a brief trip home to the United Kingdom (Chaplin was English) and Hoover learning of the trip, negotiated with the Immigration to revoke Chaplin's re-entry permit, but still I don't think that was the right thing to do.

Notice neither of those bills were passed because of public disaproval, sounds kinda like democracy doesn't it? Despite what you folks across the ocean may think, we have yet to become a totalitarian dictatorship.

This isn't yust about America, but every country in the world. Oh and the speech is amazing listen to it.
