Dunno about Mussolini, but Hitler didn't. In fact, in one of history's little ironies, in the months prior to WWII, Germany's transport system was a complete mess. Even worse than British Rail, if you can believe it. Mainly to do with the fact that Hitler bankrupted Germany in the 30s to pay for all his new toys, but he was getting quite unpopular in 1939 before it all kicked up and the people rallied behind him for the war's sake.

I guess that doesn't have a lot to do with his thread but I like throwing people bits of random trivia. You're welcome.

Meanwhile Getúlio Vargas was turning Brazil into an industrialized country...and he wasn't opposed to the idea of allying with Hitler in case things went bad for the Allies. In the end USA made the best deal I guess. =P

I personally think that Il duce was an idiot. At least in terms of military planning and leadership.

I always think it's funny that Mussolini was Hitlers hero at the start. Later this changes and Mussolini tries to become as good as Hitler.

You re right. In fact later on Mussolini adopted hitler's idea to deport/kill every italian jew in the country ,and luckily he failed with that too! Because the generals and the soldiers like most italians were hiding and protecting the jewish people instead of arresting/reporting them.
Mussolini was a great demagog ,but luckily he was one of the most incompetent leaders of all italian history.

Well, we should all know some of those painters but the rest is mostly important for Italians. And I'm never going to forget Garibaldi because of that silly movie.

Well most of them are remembered for doing incredible things or for their discoveries in music, arts, science, geography, and war.
Plus Garibaldi was a world wide hero back in the 19th century and a great sailor particularly gifted as an admiral and infatry commander .

I know Garibaldi and his volunteers thanks to Victoria 2. =)
Seriously, in Italy the most known names are usually of artists and I'm not surprised by that since it was the heart of the Renaissance.
