I would agree with that. That's why I'm glad I'm from Illinois.

Please, no. We don't need a another Civil War. Though, really it would be short and brief, seeing as the South has really dumbed itself down since then.

Why is everyone stereotying the south so much? you act as if every single soldier owned a slave and would die to make sure he kept it. Has it occured to any of you that maybe the southern soldiers were fighting for their homes and families, in fact less than 2% of Confederate soldiers even owned slaves! Think of the American Revolution,
many colonists did not like the idea of independence but joined the revlutionaries because they knew that when the British came there would be no distinction between friend and foe. The southern men had good reason to fight for their safety. Look at Sherman's march to the sea, he obliterated everything in his path. Although the aristoracy of the south may have praised slavery the common man could care less. Why cant you realize that most soldiers dont fight for ideology but for the man next to him and for his family back home.

I have to agree. Most, if not all soldiers simply fought for their homes and families. You can even see that within a few of their generals (i.e.: Robert Lee). They were fighting against invading armies, who were attacking the homes where they have lived for over 100 years, and would die for their families. They did not fight for slaves, or to keep the "peculiar institution" of slavery, which while horrible, was not the reason the Southern soldiers fought. While it was the reason most states seceded, it was not the reason soldiers fought and died.

that war was a prime example of "A rich man's war and a poor man's fight"

Edit: after a little research i found that Lee released his slaves at the begining of the war while General Sherman owned several and used them as personal aides

Yes, but it's in war like theses where one side is seen as "purely evil" such as the Germans in WWII where it is a politition waging war and average people fighting them

The Vietminh is hardly evil in the Vietnam war. In fact, I think the US was the wrong side in the war, because the people clearly didn't even want to live under Western rule. It's the only reason why the Vietminh got so popular, and Ho Chi Minh had tried to get them independent via diplomacy lots of times.

That is why it is considered a rich man's war and a poor mans fight. You never saw the politicians (LBJ) go to Vietnam. It was widely protested throughout the US.

Oh no. Absolutely not. Vietnam was probably one of the worst wars America has ever fought...ever. Just the protests that occurred, and all the civilians killed, and how in the wrong the US was. Ever since then, the US gets itself into trouble a lot more easier.

We invaded a country over a baseless claim, then we ended up killing thousands of civilians, and pepper spraying our citizens at home over protests (see Democratic national convention of 1968). So yeah, we were in the wrong.

What claim exactly was that? We started out giving training, supplies and equipment to the south like the soviets were doing with the north, until the south started to lose, at that point we started sending troops in, to try to turn the tide. I personally don't disagree with our involvment in the war, I just think we handled it poorly, both in the actual war and at home. It's 330 in the morning so I can go into more detail tommorow.

These people just wanted their freedom, and not be suppressed by the French. And even when the French pulled out, the US still beat the shit out of these people. The US - which used to be a colony - should know that freedom is a basic right, which these people didn't have, and they were fighting for.
