I realize it's now November 6th, but I had a few thoughts and questions running through my mind yesterday.

What is the fascination on the internet with Guy Fawkes? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he trying to overthrow a popular, democratically elected government to restore a catholic monarch? Why do people celebrate him as some sort of bastion of freedom of expression or thought? To the many British members of the forum, why at do you guys think about all this? Isn't he nothing more then a terrorist, that the whole world seems to celebrate as a result of a movie?

Well, most people on the internet don't really know who Guy Fawkes is, or his actual history. As far as they are concerned, it's the mask V wore in the comics and movies, and take him as the symbol of freedom, rather than Fawkes himself.

At least that's what I can grasp.

I believe it would be the fact that he tried to over throw the government is why he's used as a symbol.

Then why not use one who Succeeded in the overthrow of the Government??? or is it the fact that he failed is what made him great in a way.

Probably this. There was probably some other significant meaning to the mask that most people did not understand.

Why did they use him in the movie? Aside from it being an all around retarded and nonsensical movie and whatnot.

There are better people to use, like Huey Long or Jefferson Davis. (They make about as much sense as Guy Fawkes)

They have a mask of Reagan, besides Nixon didn't have a fail bombing of the parliament.

He at least in my view wasn't that bad a guy or a president for that matter. Besides he did get cheated out of winning in 1960.

Didn't he try to stop the oppression of Catholics by destroying Parliament? I don't think he was out to cause a Catholic revolution, although he might've said that would've been his ideal system.

He was working for Spain and the Church bro. His plan was to takeout the predominantly Protestant government in order to install a Catholic in the position of absolute monarch.

I still don't get why the English celebrated his failure.
