They surely were! It's a shame that sultan Mahmud II disbanded them in 19th century!

Christian boys mainly from the Balkans who were kidnapped by Ottoman troops and raised in the Islamic faith, right?

I'm pretty sure they would be executed if they didn't fight well...

The Janissaries were treated very well, and since they were recruited at such a young age, they were more easily influenced. Non-Turkish Christians were recruited as they had no political allegiance that might pose a threat to the ruling Osmanli dynasty.

At least, that was the idea...

They staged a series of revolts, and I'm pretty sure at least one sultan was overthrown as a result. They were disbanded as a consequence.

Were the Ottomans ever called the Osman Empire?
Cause I saw this in a game (can't remember which) and was wondering if it was true or just a glitch.

They were called the Ottomans because they were ruled by the Osman dynasty. Osmanli is the Turkish word for Ottoman.

So it may have just been some kind of translation confusion?

No, it's right there, however it's more of a typo, instead of Osman's Empire, they put Osman Empire.

The Osmanian Empire is what the English called it.
