But our NEW goal was to help protect South Vietnam, which we failed at. We should have been at war from the moment the North Vietnamese troops crossed the border AGAIN but we weren't were we? Which shows we knew we would have lost anyways and we didn't want to get embroiled in another useless war. WE SAVED FACE![/quote:2ibqfc4g]

Well did we promises the South Vietnamese to protect theme after the the treaty was signed.

South Vietnam were our allies, I think that includes military protection.

But do we consider the treaty to be a quote on quote victory, we had a long talk about this in A.P world today and my teacher said we should have invaded North Vietnam from the start.

You mean except for the whole saving the World from Communism thing? In fact, our Domino Theory was correct, and soon afterwards both Loas and Cambodia went Communist. Thailand stayed normal though, good job Thailand.

You AP World History teacher doesn't know what he/she is talking about. Invading North Vietnam only would've lost more lives for a jungle Hell-Hole. Imagine fighting the Chinese Army. It would've been a fucking bloodbath.

People were too weak to accept the minimal casualties we were having before, they would've cried havok if we had to directly fight China.

Well of course when one thing happens in the world its going to have an effect everywhere so the domino theory is in fact correct, and it was no shock that Loas and Cambodia went Communist and i honestly don't know why Thailand didn't.

I find it difficult to justify war with the premise of "saving" someone from an ideology. Plus, a few minor Asian countries turning Communist didn't really have any effect on the world.

I think it Cambodia would've preferred to not have Pol Pot come into power.

Minimal casualties? I agree the people at home thought it was a bloodbath when it was not but we suffered more than "minimal" casualties. I do agree though that invading North Vietnam would have been stupid. And yes the war was indeed pointless. Cambodia could have went communist without Pol Pot coming to power.

But our NEW goal was to help protect South Vietnam, which we failed at. We should have been at war from the moment the North Vietnamese troops crossed the border AGAIN but we weren't were we? When the war ended for us we had signed our treaty on winning terms. End of story.

Well invading North Vietnam all depends on if we had reason to which the only reason for us being there was to protect the rights of South Vietnam, Now we also need to look on at China and would they do anything well if where basing it off of the Korean war then yes they would. Personally im one of the view here who believed we should have invaded North Vietnam and ended it there "tough any politician who made that choice and screwed up was committing political suicide."

We signed another treaty with SOUTH Vietnam telling them we would protect them. Hell, that was told to North Vietnam too. You know why they broke the treaty? Because they knew we wouldn't want to get in another war anytime soon. We SAVED FACE CAUSE WE KNEW WE WOULD LOSE ANOTHER WAR!

Theoretically I would agree with you we lost theoretically. But when we ended the war we had ended it on winning terms.

America lost the war. End of story. Why is it that Americans have to believe they won every war they ever fought?

You tried to stop the spread of Communism. You didn't succeed. That's a loss.
